D2 from China? Considering a Civivi

No experience with Civivi, but the Chinese D2 in my Cobratecs has been fantastic. For an average person like me, I can’t tell the difference between my Cobratec D2 and my Benchmade D2.

As i understand things and I'm not trying to offend anyone but---

I wouldn't, no way to truly tell what mystery lunch meat steel they are using, regardless of the D2 labeling on it. check out CPM D2
Besides buying from China finances communist China but that's off topic

Well-known brands like Bestech, Kizer, and WE (the maker of Sencut, Civivi, and Ferrum Forge) are safe. You can trust them to use the steel they claim. Quality of heat treatment can be a question but that's true anywhere.

For lesser-known and newer companies, there have been community efforts to confirm the steels in question. LTK had been sending things out for XRF testing to determine composition. The above companies all check out. Lots of newer or lesser-known companies like Petrified Fish and TwoSun check out. However, some do not. For instance, lots of the knives being distributed by Eafengrow on Amazon with D2 stamps did not match. Looking at the results myself, lots of those looked to be 5Cr15. 😮

Thank you for the information

In fact, our trade deficit with China, in the end, finances our capital and financial account surplus with China. In other words, it allows us to run annual federal deficits as the Chinese lend to us and buy our debt (treasury securities). We buy their stuff (goods and services), and they buy our debt. It's an interconnected world. And a strange place to live.

There is no comparison with Kershaw USA CPM D2 and Civivi Elementum D2 in my experience. The Civivi doesnt sharpen as easy or hold an edge as well. A good D2 will maintian sharpness as carbides break down and still has a toothy edge even when dull. That doesnt happen on my Civivi knife but I only have one so maybe bad luck or heat treat. The Elementum is a great design though.

Sharpening systems:
Lanski Diamond set and ceramic hone or
Ken Onion Edition Blade Grinder

I have a few Civivi models and no complaints from me. Also have a couple Bestech and no problems there.

I got a Real Steel Luna some time ago that is one of the out of the box sharpest knives I’ve gotten. And after use still crazy sharp!! 😘
John 😎
