Hi Sal...

Don't you have any idea of making some D2 knives ?

I'd love to have a D2 military...

Regards,

Andre Tiba - Brazil

Hi Andre. D-2 is not a problem to use. The question would be whether or not the demand is there for a short run.

We have one vote for Military. any others?

One more vote here. It would be really cool if it was OD green with a black D2 blade. Just my opinion. ;)

OD green with a black D2 blade
Oh yeah,I would go for that.

Absolutely. I'd take two and I know several co-workers who would jump for a D2 steel Spydie. You build it and we will come, with friends.

A Military with green OD G10 scales and a black D2 steel PlainEdge blade would have me

Not to rain on anyone's parade as my post is certainly not meant to impede on a run of D2 if enough want it, but didnt S30V outperform D2 in edge holding, corrosion resistance and toughness in Sal's testing?

D2 is often able to be run more safely at a higher hardness than S30V, which, in many instances, means that it will hold its edge longer and be able to be ground at a lower angle than S30V with less chance of the edge flopping over. Also, it's a sentimental steel that warms hearts while costing much less than D2.

An off-brand competitor makes a folder similar in size and shape to the Military and uses D2 as that knife's steel. The only complaints it receives are from me because I try to reprofile it to a ridiculously thin geometry. Everyone else rightfully enjoys using it.

I haven't bought an S30V blade yet, but I have compared D2 and S60V blades.

I've been comparing the performance of a Benchmade 806D2 and a 440V/S60V Military for the past few weeks, doing common EDC tasks such as slicing up cardboard, whittling points on tree stakes and other common slicing, cutting and whittling tasks.

Both blades have been re-profiled and hand-edged identically to about 25 degree final included angle. Edge-retension is essentially identical. Neither blade has chipped out or suffered any damage. Overall performance is essentially identical for typical EDC tasks.

If D2 is only on par with S60V/440V, and if S30V is truly the 'wonder steel' claimed by many, I see no pressing need to add D2 to the Spyderco blade steel choices.

If Sal makes an OD Green G-10 military with a black blade... I'm with KBR --

If the blade steel happens to be D2 -- so be it! :D

I've had a Ka-Bar D2 impact spear point for about a year. And before Walt Hesson passed away he applied an edge to the knife that honestly makes me nervous to hold the thing. It's been about 5 months since he applied the edge, and it's still hair popping sharp. And being into airsoft, I go into some really dense forest, using it to build ambush hides, cut zip ties for hostage rescues, shave tent stakes, cuts yards upon yards of para cord, and so forth. I havn't used S30V yet, but if Sal says its good, I'll have to go with him on that. But D2 has proven itself in my eyes. So I vote along with the majority, and say yes to D2 Spydercos.

Really makes me sad that someone that could sharpen a knife like that, and had a sense of humor as dry as mine had to leave this world. Miss him alot even though I really didn't know him that well.

Remembering the sticker shock when they announced the price of the BFC Blue Native and the resulting problems both for BFC and for Spyderco, I suggest that you all ask for the price of your sprint run special before telling Sal that you are so certain that you want one. Sorry to act like a wet blanket, but I can see this one coming a mile off.

Hi Hugh. We wouldn't limit a D-2 model to a forum. We would make a sprint run and make them available to all.
