Damaged Package?

In a recent trade, I received a package with no knife in it. The package was marked as damaged, there was a tear-turned-into-a-hole, and there was no knife in it. The trader (and myself) agreed that because the knives were only worth around $20, we would just send them in Priority Mail boxes and not worry about insurance. So, am I screwed either way because there was no insurance? I'm not blaming the trader; none of us can control what happens to our packages once they leave our hands, but I'd like to know how to proceed with the transaction, iTrader ratings, and all of that. If I'm out $20, then I'm out $20, but I'd like some opinions.

Oh yeah, we both used USPS for shipping.

I would say yes, you're out the money. If you mutually agreed to fore-go insurance, then you basically said that you've got no problem chalking up your knives to the will of the postal gods:D

I wouldn't feel right asking for a return on my knife, especially since that would put the other person out 25-50% of the cost of a new one and leave them without a knife when they acted in good faith-I'd just buy a replacement, or not, as finances allow.

Was there a hole in a "box" or was it in one of those flimsy cardboard/Tyvek envelopes...?

IF you BOTH agreed to both send them without insurance you would need to "eat" the loss.

IF you both agreed to swap knives and did not discuss insurance or loss then the person sending the knife to you would have to eat the loss as the agreement was to trade knives and you got no knife.

Now, if you do dozens of trades or even sales and only 2 out of 400 are stolen, the money saved by not paying for insurance would more than pay for the lost or stolen ones. I self insure knives I sell and ship that sold for less than $100.00 and I have shipped at least 100 with not one loss so I am already many dollars ahead. I do insure knvies selling for more than $100. for $210.00 so that a signature is requred for delivery.

I hope that even if the knives were just sent in Priority Mail boxes that they were well wrapped so that they couldn't move around inside, or easily punch through the box.

At this point I would just right the knife off. Since there was no insurance, the USPS isn't going to pay for the lost knife. As far as iTrader goes, I'm not sure how you should handle that.
