Damascus belduque WIP

I realy enjoy your "out of the box idea"
Now those are truly handmade, really great work.
Thank you very much!! I'm really glad you like it.
As a spoiler i will say that i'm very please how the scabbard turned out, but not so much with the handle that i'm still fighting with... I think I screwed it up, today is the last chance to save it.

Have a good day you all.

Hello everyone!
I'm going to show you how this process comes to the end.
Trying to solve the domed pins, I decided to make a tool for the drill, similar to a mill. This tool will create a grove all around the pin and mill the dome. The tool works more or less...

Then i use another tool just to stick with glue sand paper to polish the pins.

This is what i get.
It is not what I was expecting, at least not entirely. I knew the pins going to get oval because of the curve of the scales, but the mayor problem is that not all are the same. The pins deform the wood diferent ways individually, there was some bigger and some smaller, some rounder and some more oval.

At this point I got tired of it, so I decided to take another way, sculpting the scales to remove the head of the failed domed pins and adding some new and nicer lines to it.

I know, this new design would be greater with domed pins, but that what I got, and I have to say that I'm very pleased.
I wanted the pins match the copper parts of the scabbard, so I tried to copy the sand-blasted texture hitting them with a center punch.

Sorry, I do not have a macro lens.

I applied perma blue to aged them and then a light hand polish.

These are the final result. I just have to sharpen it.

These pictures are quite ugly, sorry about that. I have to take some good photos on the studio.

Conclusion:
First of all, I enjoy the process and I'm very pleased with the outcome. I struggled a lot to obtain some results I didn't get, but I learned a lot in the middle. Almost all the design was thought on the march, and even it got changed, as you could see.

I'm going to post better pictures in a few days.

I hope you like it.

Best regards.

1. There is nothing wrong with the pictures you have posted, this is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. In fact I think you should post more photos.

2. I understand your quest for perfection but I personally did not mind the handle pins having the slightly rougher peened finish. That said, they certainly look perfect now.

3. Please keep up the good work, it has been fun to follow along with you on this project.

The knife and sheath looks very nice ! I love the bolster ! Its very good job :)

For the pictures . They are not bad, but there is too much light. Just make the pictures outside (not inside with lamp). Do it on a nice but cloudy day. When there is lot of light but the things "dont make shadows". Thats how im doing it. Than make some touches on contrast, focus and levels with Gimp program. It is free and makes good results (for being free ) :)
im using it too ..

When I make domed pins I do not rivet them. Just make the rounded head in desired angle on one side, put the pin in, do the mark with sharp maker/pencil, take out, add some space for the head and make another head rounded . Ÿou have to mark each one of them with number and than glue them one by one .

Good luck with your work !

Thank you very much! I will keep sharing my work in progress once in a while.

Thank you very much for the advices!
For my pictures, I use to take them on the "studio". I made a diffused light lamp that you can see in the last pic on the next link.

I'm using Lightroom to edit my photos, but I still learning to use it.
If I take the pictures outside, I always try to do that in a cloudy day, as you said. I believe that the mayor issue with this pictures was the black background, this increased the reflection areas on the knife and sheath. I'll be taking "studio pictures" today.
