Howdy folks,
I just finished welding up this billet. It's about 450 layers of 1084 and 15n20. It's 9.5" long, 1.5" wide, and about 1/4" thick. The pattern is random, which in my shop means it's very similar to ladder pattern.
I would strongly suggest not forging in the edge bevels, but rather grinding them in. This will cut through the layers, exposing the pattern, whereas forging the bevels will turn 450 layers into 800 or 900, washing out the pattern and looking ugly and/or boring.
Forging to shape is ok, or you can just grind a knife out of it.
The finished product should look similar to this:
