Reposting as a reference. We can NEVER get too much of this beauty.

A few things really stand out:
The blade steel is rich and mesmerizing.
I love the proud domed pins.
Your choice of the black epoxy to fasten really shows it's value now. The scales have a wisp of a liner as an accent.

The sheath! We get this whole WIP and this magnificent sheath just shows up for the red carpet. It's the vivacious supermodel who steps out of the limo arm-in-arm with Mr. Burt Foster, amidst the flashing papparazzi. :D

The photo shows the same sense of forethought and even better-than-expected results. The accent colors of the blacks are perfecto, and the curvy trail of stones corresponding with the diagonal lines of the planks is such a powerful visual treat. I'm crying in my coffee over here!

Best. Thread. Ever.

Burt Foster = FTW!

Burt, this has really helped me to better understand your knives. Great job, wonderful construction methods. You are the man for full tang construction. Thank you for sharing it with us. Lin

I think that this is exactly the kind of thread that could make other people understand why we all have such an interest to knives. I mean, it's quite difficult to explain to your family or friends this specific focus. That's why I'm going to have this thread printed in a small book. Next time someone will ask me why I spend so much money in knives, I'm going to say : "have a look on these pictures. Then you'll be able to talk".

Burt - I'd like to post this in a completely unrelated forum. Would you mind that?

The only way it would have been better, is if you had started with the finish piece and went backwards. ;) Just kidding. :)

But seriously, the newest enthusiast without any idea of custom knife construction got an excellent education following this thread.

Great job Burt.

Jim, so as to completely avoid publicly insulting you....I'll just say, that up there is a bit over the top.

This is a great WIP thread, no doubt....I just wish that the KNIFE itself that Burt featured had been one of his great fighters or bowies, as I find this DESIGN to be pretty unattractive......also, that big "check", "crack" or "fissure", call it what you will, in the ivory is a deal killer....would have been a deal killer from the beginning, and with the WIP thread, you can SEE that it started that way.

Carry on smartly, but at least consider the end product AS well as the process....many of you LIKE this design, that I do understand.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

I nominate you to be the honorary spice in an otherwise mild and civilized discussion.

I am not a huge fan of that knife, but this thread is fantastic. Thank you Burt for taking the time. I have a whole new appreciation for my own Burt Foster knives.

I actually am a huge fan of this design. I wish to order a fancy chopping knife like this from Burt one day, but I would change a few things. I am definately attracted to that blade design and I like the sculpted handle. I would like to see a guard though.

STeven,

You know what makes it the Best. Thread. Ever. in my book? We have gone 8.4 pages of absolutely riveting posts and accolades before I heard a single negative comment.

It's MY best thread ever. I didn't say it was yours. Maybe Burt's too. Cracks and all. Tell me what's yours?

Probably would have gone the distance without any negatives AT ALL if you didn't lay it on so thick, Jim!

I don't have a favorite, just like knives....got favorites.....the thread Anthony Lombardo started after Blade one year stands out as one that makes a difference.....the thread Kevin Jones made about the CKCA....the ENTIRE evolution of the BladeForums Bowie, and the money that it made for the fight against breast cancer....that was pretty awesome....I like this thread, don't get me wrong.....I stand in awe of Burt's skills, which is why I have more knives from him than any other maker, and primo stuff, too, not Blue Collars.

Just like I occasionally have to check myself to keep from going over the top;)...it wouldn't hurt you to do the same, amigo.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Steve,

Suggestion...? Change your avitar to a habanero pepper. I nominate you to be the honorary spice in an otherwise mild and civilized discussion. I mean, we don't want to sit around eating habaneros all day, but I appreciate your attempts at spicing up the dialogue. Makes it kinda fun. But please bring milk with you, just for the weak-of-tongue.

If this is a knife, than no I don't like the design. I see it as more a superb gentleman's machete. ;)

There's only one WIP that I have enjoyed more. We will see that one the end of May.

Burt's overall execution is absolutely outstanding. That Turkish twist is among the finest damascus patterns I have seen. I want a fighter with that pattern. Don't think there could be a more fitting sheath for this piece. Burt made it look so easy.

As far as the crack in the ivory, I'm sure it will never be a problem, however if a crack is big enough to catch the fingernail it bothers me.

Burt, I'm going to put it on the CKCA website if that's OK.

Great WIP thread  It enlightened me a lot about modern day knifemaking  And it's a good place to ask questions :D

139.jpg

I set the blade in a tray with about 1/4" of water and slowly walk down the spine with a propane torch.

140.jpg

This is what it loks like when I'm done. This will leave the blade about 58 RC at the edge and closer to 50 RC at the spine.
Burt .. are you doing the propane treatment to the tang as well? I just want to know the hardness of the tang .. is the tang is having a 50 RC or a 58 RC or another different hardness?

In your opinion, which one is good for the tang .. 50 RC (i.e. same hardness with the tang) or 58 RC (i.e. same hardness with the edge) or a different hardness (i.e. defferent from the hardness at the tang or the edge)?

So sorry for a bit late in asking this particular question .. sort of anti climax I guess .. anyhow it is better to learn something from a MS :o

I have emailed links to this thread to several collectors of things other than knives so that they can maybe better understand what goes into the making of a custom knife. For that purpose I'd say it is the best thread ever for sure.

I actually am a huge fan of this design.

Me too - in fact, I hope to try my hand at making something in this basic design for my next piece. Only it will be carbon with a clay quench and wood scales. Always liked this design and this one by Burt is clearly as good as it gets.
