Damascus is not my thing but this makes me think twice about my preferences. A really excellent knife; love the the handle and bolster!

My pleasure. Sam was visiting me at my table and saw some of this end-grain spalted maple that had been tenderly and lovingly coaxed into existence by my good friend Pete Crowl.
When he asked where I got it, I pointed to Pete down at the end of my row.
I'm thrilled to see it put to such good use.

Beautiful knife. Killer spalted maple.

A beautiful block of wood obtained thanks to Karl Andersen...

Holy Moley! One smokin' Luquin blade here. Love the wood, love the damascus, and Samstyle galore! A real treat to see this one. Great image.

I have to get one of Sam's knives. This one has all of the right material elements for my eyes to enjoy. Then Sam adds the craftsmanship and design...super.

Pete Crowl, nice job on the wood! You recognized a beauty here! Let me know if you have another piece like this waiting for a new home. I'm starting to collect cool wood and ivory. The laminated blade knife I got from you at Jerry's Microshow still sits proudly in my collection!

Very nice, the proportion and ergonomics always seem dead-on with Sam's knives.
I do prefer a guard on Fighters, just personal preference.

The Spalted Maple is Exceptional. Upon observing it was from Karl, Larry Bailey immediately came to mind as he always offered outstanding Spalted Maple and
I believe Karl got it from Larry on occasion.

Roger, seems like many collectors I look up to have acquired Sam's knives or aspire to doing same. I've been considering going on the hunt for one but overall it's been a slow knife year for me in terms of volume. The only knife I've acquired in 2012 is the Hanson Scary Tac...but Ohhhh what a knife that one is...I am infatuated with it.

Sadly, this means I have no knife to enter into Best Bowie so I will live vicariously through others. I really look forward to that thread!!!

This knife of Sam's knocked me out :p Let the hunt begin!

Kevin, this knife with a guard is an interesting concept. Trying to visualize it and imagine the shapes that would work well as this knife flows so well the way it is. Were your thoughts a finger guard on the bottom or something to the north and the south?

This question is not just for Kevin. Has Sam made this general style knife with a guard? Other thoughts on a guard on a knife with this profile? i get the practical reasons for guards on fighters and the practical vs appearance thing. Just thinking from the lens of the aesthetic here.

Rob - not exactly the same, but here is one I planned to nominate (not mine - my knives from Sam are all on the smaller side - but that should be fixed at Blade :) ):

I think both knives look sterrific. I certainly don't dispute anyone's personal preference, but there is a long and rich history of guardless fighting knives crossing many ages and cultures. I'd happily have one of each from Sam. He also does a really nicely contoured single guard:

My buddy Norbert rocking both photos.

Roger, you're faster than me...;)

Indeed this knife, like most Sam knives is a command. For a pure "Fighter" I think do not fool me by saying that Sam would be a guard...

Some of you were able to see the "fighter" of fred in Atlanta...

Hello Rob!
Berno offers a good example of a similar piece of Sam's with guard. I'm drawn towards knives in general with guards as opposed to guard less.
As stated, just personnel preference.
That's the great thing about custom knives; we can each have it our way.

Norbert - I did see Fred's fighter at Blade. I think I must have held that thing in my hand for over an hour sitting in the Pit. It was hard to put it down. One of my favourite fighters all time.

Well, wow! First, thanks Roger, Berno, and Kevin for the inputs. Now I know that Sam can add a guard and it does not mess up the flow.

Each has something going on that is different than the rest but stays true to the design. They are all really cool. I'd love to own any of the 4 pictured so far. I keep looking at them...if I could have only one of these it would be...can't decide, well, if I could have 2...

Ditto on all points.
