Hi Anthony,
It's a takedown. Finial is recessed so that I could comfortably tuck the butt into my palm and lay my finger along the top of the handle to use the blade as a "finger extension". Also so that I can comfortably strike the butt with my palm to start the point into harder material.
Sorry for the poor exposure here, but it shows the recessed finial. The finial cap is stainless steel in case any unnoticed moisture accumulates there between cleanings:

Ah, "take down", that's a feature that will pay in spades on this piece.
