Damascus Leek?

UPS just threw mine on the porch. Very pleased with the look of the blade. Sorry to hear theres not alot of hope for more Damascus in future Kershaws.

Love the Boron look Jeremy

STR, you should have kept it pink. It would have been
the only one ever as I don't see anyone changing a new one to pink. :D
You could just tell them it is fuschia. hehe

Just ordered a 1660DAM and a 1660BG. plan on swapping the blade out of the DAM and putting it in the BG. Should look awsome. Ill post a pic when I get all the parts.

I'd like to see a polished G10 Damascus Leek, bet it would look neat.

I have a question about Damascus. If you got one of these Leeks and reprofiled it flat to the stone, would the layers still show up on the part of the blade that gets ground away?

Either way I might have to grab one of these.

Any polishing/grinding will cause the pattern to not be visible.. However, if you polished the pattern uniformly off, you could renew it fairly easily... I've done it before w/ good results. The process involves re-etching the damascus with acid (try Radio Shack and ask for circuit board etching acid)... there's a fair amount of info online as well... good luck! I'm adding amboyna & african blackwood scales to mine -should be sweet! I'll post pics when done...

As Phil pointed out you would have to re-etch if you grind it any. The blade is pretty thin as it comes actually. You dilute the etch and the amount of pattern that comes forward vs the lack of seems determinant on that so you may have to play some to find what works best to your liking. I've never tried it full strength and as I recall Tim told me they diluted theirs 50% but don't hold me to that. I need to check again but I think thats what he said in passing with me on the phone. We talked about several things and that was just briefly mentioned so I need to really know first I guess. Maybe he will see this and chime in.

i just etched some damascus the other day....use white vinegar and the acid you buy at radio shack for circuit boards-pcb.....POUR THE ACID IN THE VINEGAR!!!!!.....NOT the other way around....i used like 50/50 mix....depending on the damascus it might look darker than the original color so you might have to buff it.....if the blade has alot of scratches from sharpening.....use 600 wet dry grit sandpaper to sand the whole blade.....then clean with alcohol before ethcing.....hope that helps.....ryan

Thanks for the information. If I end up getting one of these I'll let you know what I do to it.

Was in Smokey Mountain Knifeworks this weekend. The damascus leek is listed in their latest flier but they said it was not there yet! Did get a nice JYD II however!:)

Kymooseman, I received mine from SMKWs last thursday, don't know if they ran out, but they did have them.

Just got an email telling me they were in stock. Ordered 2 of them tonight.
And got free shipping.

Now I have to work 2 Saturdays to pay for them. haha

Just got mine tonight along with a Needs Work for the GF.

The etch came out really nice on mine, great contrast in the layers.
Hopefully I can get some pics up before the end of the weekend.

FINALLY took pics of mine. Between contributing to RailsRumble over the weekend and last second sudden deadlines at work all week I haven't had much freetime since I got it. Pretty close to my favorite knife at thins point.

I receive my Damascus Leek last week. Out of the box, it was very slow opening and the assisted opening was not working well at all. I had to disassemble the knife, clean off a sticky coating on the blade and pivots and adjust the assisted opening spring to get a reasonable action. I have several Kershaws and this is the first one ouot of the box that I hever had a problem with.

Now that the knife is working better, I really like the damascus Leek.

Cheers!

thanks for posting pics of the leek....it helps those of us on the fence about buying one......it looks alot different than i thought it would.....thanks agin....ryan

I thought the knife came with SS handles! Mine is enroute to me and G-10 is perfect. I am glad I was wrong.
