Dan Koster...what can I say ?????

I thought a lot about it and most everything has pretty much already been said here & on his forum over the last many months. Do a search there if you want to know.

I think Dan is a stand up guy at heart. A guy who means well in all he does.

He makes a very, very nice knife to say the least....... Grind lines are perfect, fit & finish are also..........

However, just like the rest of us....Dan is not perfect...... ;)

He sometimes underestimates time lines by a long shot........ a real long shot in some cases. :) [I have said this on Dan's own forum.... more than once in the last several months.]

He gets so many projects going at one time his head is probably spinning at times.

Most, IF NOT ALL of this could have been avoided by simple, honest, timely communication about the time lines of projects that have been missed.

To Dan's credit............ over the last months he seems to have been making a valiant effort to dig himself out. Keep it up Dan...........
BUT, please also remember to keep those updates coming in a timely manner........ it helps greatly. I am not saying spend hours on them..... just a short general note would satisify most.

I personally do not blame anyone who has had a complaint about time lines and/or communication. Because time lines you set have been shattered and your communication... at times.... has sucked.

BUT, none of us are perfect.......... AND, I honestly do think you are a stand up guy who is working out the "fantastic growth curve" your business experienced ..... along with the "problems" that go with that.

Good luck and keep it headed in the right direction.

Merry Christmas,
Chuck P.

One quick question to any knifemaker;

If you as a maker did not take deposits or pre-payment, would you accept orders for 50-75 knives?

I imply nothing and mean nothing negative. This has been a question that I have asked makers that I have ordered and given them the asked deposit who then promise a delivery date only to discover they have 60-100 knife orders, all with deposits filling their in-basket and a stack of knife show knives almost ready to go.

Could a maker afford to lay out that much money for materials to fill all the orders they have taken and not required a deposit

I think in large orders like you speak of where vast amounts of money will be involved it would be best for all parties involved to get into a legal contract.

wolfmann601 and severedthumbs,

The OP started this thread to address Mr. Koster specifically. If you want to ask questions to all knifemakers I would suggest starting a new thread.

I screwed this up teacher. My apologies to you and to others who wanted to reply to the thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=604497

Mike G suggested it be left open, but once the issue had been apparently resolved I didn't want to be seen as piling on. But then I received PM's from others wanting to add comment, and opened it for them.

To check myself I wanted to see what the precedent was so reviewed all GBU threads for the past year: 2892 individual threads, and just 6 were closed (0.2%), each for extraordinary reasons. Wrong forum, nutjob posts, Spark redirecting to a sticky, things like that.

Sorry for the thrashing and confusion. From now on I'll leave everything open and stop over-analyzing. If there's something inappropriate posted I'll let the mods handle it.
