dancin a jig cuz of my jig!

Robert, thanks for the pics. I'm gonna try that Tonight. I like that sander. I'm using a Blue Point Hurricane. It is fully adjustable for angle too, but it involves a wrench and a hammer to make the adjustments .

I also found its easier to to stand off to the side of the grinder and "pull" the jig to you than it was to stand in front of it and "push" the jig.

Hey no worries there bud. Thats why ya grind em in batches so you only have to mess with that wrench and hammer once.;)

Did someone wants pics of my set up?

It's VERY simple. It's just the factory tool rest with a piece of ~28"-30" long angle iron bolted to it. (I had to cut a small part of the iron out so it would sit flat on the tool rest of course).

Then the whole thing has UHMW epoxied to it.

PLEASE - I am getting ready to grind my first blade ever and I am freaking out about screwing it up (since I have already had it heat treated by Paul Bos). Any tips, pics etc would be great.

Yeah let us see it Nick.
Mark G, if it's your first blade and you allready have it heat treated go slow and dip in water often. I was allways in a hurry when I first started grinding and screwed more blades up than I made. If my jig doesnt suit your taste Nick's might. Either one should help to keep your mind off screwing it up.;)
Dixieblade57 thanks. I like to try and keep things as UNcomplicated as much as possible. And really, another downside to this jig is the set up time. it doesnt take long to get the knife all clamped up but if you have several angles on your knife you will have to clamp and unclamp that many times. But hey, i can sacrifice time for nice clean grinds.:D:D
Kostoglotov thank you for the compliments. I would like to try making another one but this time get the tapped screw holes more even and have the working surfaces surface ground as well as the work rest. Gixxer might be on to something with using aluminum. I would think aluminum angle plate would be a heck of alot flatter than the angle iron i used.

I can try to get a picture tomorrow, but I think you guys misunderstood me/my set-up.

I don't have a jig, or anything fancy.

When I grind, I put the spine of the blade on my tool rest. There's still 37.475 ways to screw up the grind.

If you've seen a tool rest on a grinder, just imagine a bar of steel bolted to it that makes it much wider. :)

My overzealous rant was just due to the fact that I knew there would be 50 replies about how Robert and others should get rid of his jig. There are some fixtures, like the "hollow grinding made easy" fixture, that I own, and have not used in over 12 years because I didn't like it. I was just trying to save Robert some hassle. :)

LOL!:o Yeah guess we did. And i really want to thank you for going to bat for me over using a jig. I allways had reservations about using jigs because for one, i didnt think any other "self respecting" knife makers were using them so i wasnt going to either. And two, I wasnt sure how the people who were buying my knives were going to take it. I think when customers get a "hand crafted" knife they might think grinders and dill presses and the like are being used but its being done "free hand" and if a "device" is used to aid in that then an eyebrow or two might get raised.
Thanks again to all who have given a  to the way I now flat grind.

P.S.
On a side note if anyone is interested, that hole in the back of my jig on the part that sits on the tool rest was another tapped hole that i was gunna put a screw in to adjust the angle of the jig. It didnt work real well.:thumbdn: So thats when i decided to adjust the angle of the platen instead. Works much better.

Kind of anticlimactic eh? LOL

This is what I use... to rest the spine on while flat grinding.

Dam Nick my skinny ass could sleep on that thing:D

Thats the rest of rest

robert thanks i just learned a years worth of grinding in 5 min of reading and i also agree with knife maker about cheaters i have to be a cheater and use a grinder after being dissabled in a car accident ide last 5 min of grinding by hand and loose all the feeling in my left arm. I would say if you like blisters and sweating what ever. before we had hydralic hammers at work we drove spikes by hand.go figure lol

I was at a friends house the other night , went over to grind at his place using his Bader ( mine still tracks like crap ) , he had the Frink platen for his Bader , which allows you to lean it forward.
Leaning the platen forward a few degree's and holding the blade at a 90 to the rest , made flat grinds a lot simpler to keep straight. Now I feel the need for a KMG platen for my Bader.

Like having a built in 1/2 jig :)
