Darkening Carbon Steel?

I've recently started having some blades parkerized by a local gunsmith.

The one in the back with the green scales is one of them. It's been holding up way better than the caswell black oxide treatment that I sometimes use.

Very nice! I'd love to get one of my knives parkerized one of these days just to have one.

I just got a chopper back from Peter's heat treat that was mil spec hot black oxided and i've got to say I'm really impressed with the treatment. It was done over a blasted finish. I chopped firewood up to make a fire last night and there is only minimal marks on the coating thay just about disappear when wiped with a oily rag. Compared to the cold black oxide i've tried before, it is leaps and bounds better. I'll have to see how it holds up to kydex after I get a sheath made.

Here is black oxide over a bead blast from Peter's heat treat. After talking to them, this finish could be applied over a 220 finish. I'm going to try sending a 220 grit scotchbrited belt finish to them and see how it compares to a 230 hand sand. This one was a 400 grit hand sand.View attachment 3126811

Thanks! I've spent about 24 hours making this knife in total, but i wanted to make myself something special haha.

No pants yet! Have to buy a kydex press still to give making some a shot. Wish me luck haha.

Its black canvas micarta with stainless tubes. Wanted to go for that classic early 2000s tactical knife look. 20260307_155333.jpg20260307_155324.jpg

I'm hoping to be able to replicate the finish without the labor intensive hand sanding or spending forever with a bunch of grit progression. I don't have a surface grinder so it always spend forever chasing grits trying to free hand the flats.
