Darkening infi

No plans on hot bluing. I'm real stubborn, I might go on a journey to see what if anything can patina infi.
Cutting onions and potatoes put a patina on my infi. Nothing drastic, but it's got the blues and yellows on it.

Sure would! I think it’ll look great. I’m one of the few weirdos who likes the look of a beat up coating so I don’t have any stripped.

I did do an acid wash on a Spyderco blade I had and it turned out great. I did it the ghetto way though - gravel and blade in a Gatorade bottle, towels around that, duct taped, and ran a few cycles in the dryer.
I too, like the look of a worn coating. It lets you know it has seen some work.

I don't like the whole blade to be shiny, just shinyedges 😛.

The rest of the blade I like worn. Never did like coatings, except on strippers. Saves worry of rust under scales. Plus the decarb is nice and matte. I like strippers 😍

Hard for me to vision the finish from that raw dog on the infidu but I don’t think it would be as striking in a smaller blade. The TNT is kinda in your face when it comes out in the room.

Excellent information! Thanks. Might make this into a project. Remove handles, etch, stone wash to get a black wash, and then reattach handles. It would be a sexy infidu.
This sounds fantastic, please post photos and link the protocol if you do this, I'd love to give this a try as well on some of my not quite stainless blades!

Curious what my naked Alpha Reg would look like....

I tried Hoppes Gun Blue 1700 on old-style Competition Finish INFI that didn't have the decarb removed. It didn't prevent rust. Years later I took a ScotchBrite pad to the decarb and reblued them with Brownell's Oxpho-Blue, which worked much better, although it still didn't give a deep blue like you'd get on carbon steel. A few years after that, the knives were still rust-free, but I wanted a darker blade. Someone had mentioned Kleen-Bore Black Magic for SR101, so I tried that. it came out much blacker. Not so black that Nigel Tufnel would look at it and say, "how much blacker could it be," but still pretty satisfactory. And still no rust, but I put that more down to it being INFI with the decarb removed, There's a thread about that here.
