David Broadwell(dbl-edge) posts here a bit.

That's appreciated.

He's a full time maker, and has been making and selling knives since 1982. That's 3 or 4 years longer than I have been collecting them.

He can do it all, and is especially talented at carving.

I don't like a lot of his designs, and we disagree about some design elements he incorporates into his subhilts, but that disagreement is what makes a horse race.

David makes BladeForums a better place by his postings, and have hope that he continues to do so. I'm posting this publicly because I don't know David personally, and have only interacted with him publicly.

Please post some David Broadwell knives or some such that you like....you all will see why I felt compelled to make this post.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

This pair of lefties is David's handiwork. The original design was the clip point and I asked him to make a companion hawkbill. The hawkbill has made an excellent EDC for the type of work that I put knives through during the weekdays (office-style stuff--cardboard boxes, etc.). It was the favorite for cutting wrapping paper at our last adopt-a-family event. :D

Steel is Mike Norris D2 core sanmai, ladder pattern.

Here are a bunch. I own but one - the first shown - but I have long been an admirer of the full spectrum of his work.

I have no images of David Broadwell's work to show, but many are imbedded in my mind. And so are the several email contacts I have had with him. One involved the Joe Kious "Stormbringer" subhilt boot knife. Knowledgeable, kind responses.

I absolutely love the work of David Broadwell. I love his techno folders. I love his Bakelite techno folders. I love his carving, both on handles and on blades. The only reason I probably don't own one is because of my continuous quest for Busters.

I frankly think David Broadwell's work is undervalued.

EDIT: And I absolutely love his use of bronze.

2ND EDIT: Roger, I love that subhilt

Truth be known, a lot of makers really admire his work. I know I do. His carving and blends of texture and color are amazing. I dont have pictures, but will surely be watching this thread. Lin

well Steven, this is certainly a nice surprise!:cool:

I also like David Broadwell's work very much. He has Ray Cover engrave his knives quite often and Ray does exceptional work also.

I just have a couple of images of this one:

Good thread, STeven. :D

Here's a folder David made for me a few years ago. We go back about ten years in dialog. He acknowledged my earliest work in photography and making kit knives with support and appreciation.

There are more.

BTW^^ that Asian subhilt STILL is one of my very faves. Right Marc? ;)

David and I have exchanged emails several times because of our common interests in Jamaica. He has a daughter that is traveling on a mission there to work with deaf children. We have ties with a couple orphanges and have adopted two orphaned children into the Bump family over the years. Anyway David is raising money for her trip by raffling off tickets to win a subhilt for only $5 each. He also has a very cool WIP on the knife at knifedogs http://knifedogs.com/showthread.php?t=5415

Sorry if this seems like a shameless plug but David Broadwell is more than a knifemaker and is leaving his mark around the world.

Bruce, thanks for this shameless plug, otherwise I wouldn't have known I have a contribution to make! I can't remember my id/password on knifedogs, but don't think it matters, as I have David's Paypal address - payment for 24 tickets on the way.

Thanks for the info.

24 tickets? Wow! I only bought 6 :D

I have long been a David Broadwell fan and currently this fine work of art adorns a shelf above my fireplace

it is Phyllis' favorite knife I believe although maybe the Harumi's or Wolfe folder have taken over -- just not sure.

on the same place but pointed opposite to the Broadwell fighter is this dagger by Paul Jarvis.

and what the heck, just to show the other knives, here they are too

I think David is in very good company with the Paul Jarvis and some other Wolfe's and will just have to enjoy the fact that the other pieces are not far away.

David is an outstanding maker and I'm certainly happy that I have this fighter and it is one knife that does not depart my hands until they are cold and dead.

Sheesh, now I'm never going to win that raffle. ;) :D Good on ya, Bob!

David has been very helpful and encouraging with my own (sporadic) forays into knifemaking.

I've been a long time admirer of David's work. I had the pleasure to have David design two knives for me. He sent me sketches and we worked out the details from there.

Folks, I'm overwhelmed! Thanks, STeven, for starting this thread (horse races are a good thing). I'm honored!

Murray, I'm pleased to be in such good company.

Bruce, thanks for mentioning the fund raiser.

You guys are great, and I appreciate it.

I remember this one well:cool::thumbup:........I still kick myself almost every day for not buying it when it came up for sale on BF a couple of years ago (and for a fancy price no less).

Well, David...you do great work and have been doing it for a long time.

I get into the habit of really bashing on a lot of folks within the community...sometimes it is deserved, and sometimes it isn't.

Just got to feeling bad...not about my position, but the way it was coming out....and you do a great service to the community by participating here...you have a very respectable aesthetic and body of work that you bring with you to the discussions.

Best Regards,

I'm a fan David's work and we have become friends in the last couple of years as well. He recently completed two knives for me, and I
am in the process of getting some photo's done that hopefully do them justice. Soon, I will be posting a WIP thread of a new dagger
that we worked on, (symetrical design..), that I think will get a hardy thumbs up. It truly exceed my expectations, and the materials
are very cool too.

Till then, here's two views of a sub-hilt by David that I have owned for several years.. If you look close, it has several subtle variations
from his usual designs.. The OAL is 15 3/4" with a 10 1/2" blade. The damascus is a tighter than usual Ladder pattern by Mike Norris
that was made exclusively for this piece. It is San Mai stainless damascus with a 440v core. The front guard and hilt are 416 Stainless,
with the large butt being 303 Stainless. The handle material is African Blackwood and it has very fine red liners, beautifully finished at
the scales. The balance is great, and it is without a doubt the sharpest knife I own, top clip included. Have a look..

so STeven, now that we are all kumbaya and all that :p

...should i repost the pic of my Broadwell/Foster laminated subhilt ??

As I recall, that one may have led to "style" issues ;)

In addition to being a fabulous knifemaker, David is also very reliable to work with, and terrific with communications.

It is really special that guys like he, Burt Foster, Bruce Bump, Kevin Cashen et al (don't want to miss any names) take the time to post WIPs, hints, techniques etc that allow us to see "behind the curtain"
