I was just wondering what you other part time makers do on the side for bread, butter, pension, etc.I am a patrolman on an Army owned munition production installation,19000 acres. We are like patrol LEOs,dogcatchers, conservation officers, and guards, all rolled up into one. Our duties are varied every day.One minute we are out running radar, the next minute we are chasing a poacher, checking a hunter or fisherman, transporting a prisoner, or guarding something we don't talk about. we handle wildlife calls such as an injured animal, or sometimes capture an animal, or shoot one. Our installation donated several thousand acres to other county and local village interests when we were larger. I work also as a part time state licensed PI, but am considering on giving that up. I would rather try to catch up some on my knife making. If I was more like Roger Linger and Dave Larsen,I could do all three jobs and not have to sleep. They never sleep! Just a few more years, and it's full time making for this old Indian. How about you fellas, and gals?

Assistant IS director for a collections agency. Pays the bills, but not a whole lto more(or won't once last school loans start coming due in April). Boss goes shooting more often than I do though, so not a bad place to work(least not judging by coworkers).

9-10 hours a day M-TH, then 4-10 depending on what all is oging on Friday. Occasional weekends too.

John, nice idea for a get acquainted thread. So here goes.

Programmer geek at a software company. Official title is Software Architect whatever that's supposed to mean. The reality is I write more emails than software.

Good news/bad news is I keep promising knives, so I have more promised than I can finish. And creativity is limited, because people say, "Make me one of those" and I say OK. I love doing it and making people happy. But I need to slow that down.

I don't know if I could do it 'full time'. Although I dream about it. I'm hoping to get the basics down by the time I retire. I think it will make a great 'retirement' job.

I been a mechanic of one form or another my whole life - never on vehicles - always airplanes or industry.

When I left the USAF in '89, I went back to school and got my BS in Marketing. I worked in advertising a year and a half... hated it. I hated being behind a desk. SO! I went back to wrenching. I took welding classes, and went to school for machining. I also took electrical classes and circuit theory.

Now I'm an over-educated idiot. Oh btw... did I mention I love this job?

Nope, I'll stay in this job until my kids college loans are paid and then I can just outright quit and duff around the shop at home.

You've heard the phrase: Pastures always greener on the other side of the fence". Sounds like John has the ultimate job out there on that 19,000 acres!

Me? I'm a mechanical engineer working with natural gas compressors. Kinda halfway between the design engineering dudes and the sales dudes, get involved a little in both. Mostly just crunching at the computer applying what we sell to what they need.

Second career is the family. A much more pleasant career than the first. Wonderful gal for a wife and two kids to chase.

Knife making comes in as the ultimate stress reliever and something to set full concentration on to avoid other distractions.

I am a Reactor Physicist at a Nuclear power plant.

Most of my hobbies are hunting or shooting related (ok...I am a hillbilly Physicist). When I got into knifemaking it was so that I could work with my hands and create something...nobody told me it would become such an obsession!...:D

Take Care all

Linux Administrator on a 512 processor super computing cluster, and waiting on delivery of a 2500 processor cluster.

I have to find time to get things moving again, and unlike Sando....I promise nothing. He has business lined up and waiting, but in my position they will have to choose from the finished stuff. I would rather be a programmer, but i don't program.

I am an editor/writer for Bass Pro Shops. I've been a knife knut for quite some time but just got into knifemaking a year ago. It's both a stress-reliever and a stress-maker.

I also enjoy long walks on the beach. :D

I'm a little like John and Terry and was involved with Law Enforcement for a good bit of my life. Worked for the state and then went to the Feds for about 5 years. I got hurt several times and never really developed the Federal mentality so I pulled the plug and rejoined the real world!

Peter, I'm trying to reconcile your avatar and that statement. It's not working.

Unless by laptop, you mean one of that corn grinders that you hold in your lap instead of using holes worn in bolders. That's kinda hi-tech. ;)

Steve

Sorry Steve. The avatar is not a picture of me. I do have a beard though. I'm a little older than the fellow in the picture, limp some from assorted injuries, behave like a 10 year old, own a a jeep with a rifle in the back and since I own the company, to hell with those gate guards that don't like it.

I try not to wear a coat and tie anymore although sometimes I have to.

To sum it up, I am out of the correct time for me and wish I WAS THE FELLOW IN THE AVATAR!

I was going to ask the same thing -- I wondered if you wore the buckskins to work everyday.

:D

if you wore the buckskins to work everyday

Blue Jeans unless my wife hides them and I have to wear :barf: Dockers.

Inside sales and tech support for Boltswitch, Inc. We are a manufacturer of high current fusible bolted pressure switches. I've been here since 1988 and worked my way up.

Metalworking is my main hobby. Target shooting, paintball and a few other things when I have time.

Right now I'm making custom stainless handles for balisong knives. I've decided though that it's time to learn how to make my own blades too. I'm already picking the brains of the experts around here and will keep doing so while I'm learning.
