Just had me a fatty cheese steak and must go work in the shop... Will check back to see if Kali and the gang show up again for another late night chat.
Sorry bout that... Had to rearrange my desk area. Knifemaking is going slow
Got a single speed burr king grinder. Just got a cheap, but FREE drill press. Also, the guy I am apprenticing somewhat under (Gave it to me) threw in some belts and blanks/unfinished knives for me to practice my handle work on. Haven't even finished my first handle with him no less ALONE
So it will be a fun challenge. Need to insulate my garage and get a heater and a bunch of other stuff, so needless to say, it'll be a while. Funds suck, but can't complain since I have a roof, 4 walls, heat and food.
Got pretty much everything I need except a serious grinder and an Oxy/acetylene set up..... just gotta fire everything up and start pounding grinding sanding and finishing...... got me a nice wire fed mig set up... practicing trying not to burn holes in the steel..... hope to fire up the charcaol forge this week.... got a propane forge... but always wanted to try my first on a good old fashioned forge..... should be fun.....
I was thinking about the Criswell story you told me.... just physics alone makes me wonder if the was torqued with a good amount of force and hit along the first 1/3 of the blade near the handle.... the weight of the blade in front would contribute to the stress on the blade.... if it was the first 1/3 of the blade near the tip.... then I kinda wonder about the strength of the blade and heat treat.... but hey.... I'm no expert.... I still think they were made for mats... bamboo.... and bodies
Work in the best knife shop in Anchorage right now. Looking into a warehouse job, praying they call me with a "You're hired" soon. Not that the shop or employee/boss are bad, just that retail ain't my thing
Should still work there part time though. Ton's of fun Have a few regulars that I get to show off my infi too and one even showed me how to make that D Guard that I posted the tutorial on.
The shop is great. Sharpening, learning about knives, meeting the local makers, fondlin' the new merchandise We don't sell fantasy knives either
Most may never need a guard, but it definately helps protect your knuckles (not your punching, but joint knuckles ) from brush and such. I'll have to practice the 5 strand one. That one is a flugin' pain in the arse. The tutorial was of a 3 strand and the 5 is freakin' cool
Busse throwing stars would be fun A waste of steel, but still fun lol
