So batoning wood it finally snapped. I have had this one for a long time, probably the better part of 10 years. I have used and abused the hell out of this blade for all of that time. Before all of you say it shouldn't have broken or Ontario sux, I was batoning it with a mini sledge lol. You will see the spine spikes have been flattened. I knew it was going to break I just wasn't sure when. At the time o was trying to get through an oak knot and was beating the crap out of it.
Now it's time for the Bk9 to get beat on lol.

So what exactly is the point of this thread?

The point may be that even a crowbar with an edge can fail after enough beating with a small sledgehammer.
I personally don't use my energy is this manner, but I am glad that others do.
Was the peice of oak so "knotty" that it needed a beating ?
Ha ha...not funny.

For one, I made it because I can. And it was a really knotty piece of oak. I don't start with a sledge I start with a reg baton and I got half way through and broke the second baton. I tried to get the blade out and it was really stuck so I smacked it with the 5lb mini sledge that I use with my splitting wedge. And like I said I have had it a long time and I beat the poo out of it and it has never failed me till now. It is what it is stuff breaks and seeing how small the tang is where it enters the handle I'm surprised it didn't break sooner.

So once again I ask you..... What is the point of this thread?
Just to inform us that you broke your knife doing something YOU KNEW would break it?
Well if that's the case..... I guess my response would be.............

Cool story bro!! :rolleyes::D

Isn't that the whole point of a forum, is to share our experiences and what not? Whatever......have a great day!!

A real shame that Jeepster clown couldn't be here to come in to call you all sorts of names for daring to desecrate an Ontario product in such a manner LOL

OK he broke it. He's not crying.

The interesting thing to me, well not interesting. Not surprising, is where it broke. Knifemakers and Knife company's continually build heavy use knives with this type tang and insist that it's not a problem. I'm not an engineer and not a knife maker but I'm saying that they are full of shit. Who in the heck could look at that blank and not figure that when the blade broke it would break there?

Sure it's a weak point, but designers don't design knives to be hid with sledgehammers......

Looks like it failed at the smallest cross sectional area, like we would expect. Looks like it withstood a lot of abuse! Looks like a good excuse to buy another knife.

When it adds something to the collective knife discussion here......

As it stands, this thread is one of two things....

A useless "informative" thread about what you did to your knife

Or a "just sayin" type thread, where you pretend that you know the issue was expected and normal, but secretly want to stir the pot with regards to Ontario tang strength. If you truly new this was going to happen, you would have no reason to post the results here. What you did was throw this out there as a feeler to see if anyone went "hmmmmmm, I don't know if that's normal" or "maybe they should make them stronger!", at which point you would turn around and go " yeah! You're right! This thing WAS weak!"

Either way, the knife wasn't designed to be hit with a sledgehammer so it broke. That's all there is to it;)

None of the above. No secret agenda or black helicopters, just felt like sharing but hey thanx for crapping all over it.
