Every once in a while I get a customer who wants all correspondance through their office email, and packages sent to an office address. I many cases the reason is clear, they dont want their wife to know what they are buying. I consider myself very lucky, my wife is very understanding with my collecting purchases. Does your better half always know how much you spend on you knive collection?

One of the reasons that I do not have a better half is due to the fact that I spend so much time and money on my collection. :(

I keep nothing from my wife, she's seen a lot of knives pass thru and has never
said a word. I bought a Corvette a few years ago and she's never questioned me about it. You see my paycheck goes directly to her, I don't take anything from it. I've got a bit of income from another venture and that's how I fund my toys.

I'm very lucky!

I am single. No need to hide anything from anyone.

Kind regards,

Jos

When I sold my first Corvette I wrote my wife a check for 1/2 of the profit. She has never questioned a purchase since.

My wife is also a collector. After I started she quickly got into it and fully 40% of our collection is in her display. We went to Cancun a while back and the Mexican chaps were constantly saying things like "you're the luckiest man in the world!" because of her physical appearance. They had no idea that they were right on many levels! Great to share passion in many different ways.

This is the gold Eagle knife by Stephen O. that I gave her for Valentine's Day. Thanks to Michael Donato for making it happen. She loved it!

Well... I have to admit that I usually manage things this way... and I show her later what I've bought. But no, she doesn't know exactly how much I spend. I guess she doesn't really want to know. It's a kind of silent agreement !

Yes, you are very fortunate. I imagine having a wife that shares your passion for knives would make collecting so much more enjoyable.

Good thread wolfe.

Hello Wolfgang,

This is interesting... A world class custom knifemaker also collecting
custom knives? Can you tell us some more? I don't suppose you
collect your own knives :) but then I wonder, where else can you find
knives that are as beautiful?

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Tell my wife?

Let me put it this way, I not only don't tell my wife, I wear a disguise with a fake mustache and beard when ordering my knives, even when ordering on the phone, just so the maker can never identify me in divorce court if my wife ever did find out about my knives. :D

My wife knows everything about me, no wonder after 26 years of marriage;), so she is in the loop about my knives as well. To keep her happy I even listen to her (occasionaly) when it comes to a knifepurchase or -sale:D. So I do own a couple of "girly" knives because of her, but I don't mind because in the end she is very supportive in regard to me sustaining my habbit:D.

Marcel

My wife isn't stupid. She knows quality when she sees it, so trying to fool her about the amount I spend on knives would be a big mistake.

David, I do not truly collect custom knives. I "gather" some examples of the makers I admire though. My true collecting interest is in early hunting daggers. unfortunately this can be even more costly than custom knives.:(

Now the real secret to this is to purchase two knives. The nicer and more expensive one goes to her. She'll be happy and so will you....... :D

Like many of the others here, my wife has allowed me to pursue my passions and collecting freely. She saw how that led to my photography, which, in turn, benefits the entire family. :)

Now, so many knives come and go that she has a tough time keeping my score. It's a sweet gig.

"Oh yeah, I've had that one for a while....!" :p

Look at the car in my sig. That's taking some serious discretionary funding now. Shhhhhhhhh.....

Wolfe, here's a story: Long ago I worked as the owner of a M/C performance shop. Often I would place a call to the owner, to let them know their expensive project was finished. By happenstance, I got the missus instead of the owner, and she politely asked what the total was. And I told her... (You can see this coming.....)

Boy, did I get MY arse chewed out by the client when he came by. A mistake I would never make again, although I pi**ed off many a wife when the same question was rebuked.

This I can appreciate, Wolfgang. Collecting early knives also
fits the image I have of you.... :)

I couldn't deceive my wife even if I wanted to. I'm far too honest, and am plagued with a genetic predisposition for guilt;). I'd be sunk from the get go if I forced myself to live a lie.

When I decided that I wanted knives again, I realized I had the choice right there about being upfront about it, or to keep my interest under my hat. I am glad that I took the high road with that decision, since my wife is starting to share my interest, which is not really something that I expected.

I deal with guys all the time who guiltily spend money on high end bikes and the like, and honestly, I don't know how someone could feel bad about being less than honest with their wife, and then go and deceive them anyway:confused:.

I tell her what I buy and she has yet to ask about the price, even when I went through a depression buying spree last week when we got some disturbing news about the baby she is carrying (should be good now though). If you can't trust somebody why are you with them?

Ha! I can buy a new knife anytime I want to (get in trouble.)

I'm in charge in my house, and what I say goes (right out the window.)

And if the wife doesn't like it, she can just leave (with my credit card, and buy anything she wants.)
