Deceiving your better half......

I don't discuss my purchases with her, but certainly don't try and hide anything either. But it's not like she shows me her Nordstom's bill every month, and all those shoes didn't grow on a tree in the yard.

My wife Phyllis is my partner. We share everything and while she wondered when I first started buying knives in 1980, she now has quite a few in the collection and enjoys them all. She was very involved in the CKCC when I was both President and a Director and she proudly wears her CKCA hat and TShirt. In fact Wolfe she asks what happened to the folder delivery meant for Dec 1, 2008. Looking forward to chatting in a couple weeks.

some of her knives include

Harumi Hirayama -- very heavy influence in making this purchase as HH was so happy to see both these knives stay together and in our hands.

together we have attended knife shows in Canada and all over the US and will be at CKG again this year. Heck, she has to love the knives because trying to keep everything dusted is a great job indeed.

Ha! I can buy a new knife anytime I want to (get in trouble.)

I'm in charge in my house, and what I say goes (right out the window.)

And if the wife doesn't like it, she can just leave (with my credit card, and buy anything she wants.)

:D

You owe me a new keyboard for spilling my coffee.

Murray, you're slayin' me! I was "the King" until you posted the collection Phyllis has created. :)

All kidding aside, fantastic! Phyllis, your taste in knives is exquisite. My wife, Heather, especially likes the Zaza, the Foster, the Butch & Judy Beaver, the Stan Fujisaka & Judy Beaver, and the Josef Rusnak. That's a lot of liking as she is very particular and not a greedy or envious person at all.

Well, then came the first time I've witnessed knife envy in her! Actually, it was more like a sigh of awe. For 2 years we've been searching for a Harumi for her collection. All she wants is one like Phyllis has. When I showed her the matched pair she was mesmerized. We are glad they stayed as a set and in such a beautiful collection. Our hunt continues (which is what makes this whole thing fun).

It's great having a partner who is passionate about knives. A piece of the experience that's missing for her is that no other women we know understand.

Perhaps I'll start a "Women of Blade Forum...Their Collections" thread.

DDD, idea for an upcoming book or section of a book, The Venus Collections

Best, Rob

I have been married for 30 years. I think it would be very sad to not be able to share my purchases with my wife. She doesn't always "get it", but she humors me. As long as everything else is taken care of a few discretionary purchases should be alright.
I think if a person is hiding things from the spouse there are deeper problems, in this case excessive debt.:(
Celebrate your toys.:)
Murray, your wife has very good taste. Her purchases could populate a design theory textbook!

Initially, my spousal unit was somewhat vocal about my "hobbies." It didn't take long to discover that plying her with diamonds and gold jewelry keeps her off my ass. :D

So I do own a couple of "girly" knives because of her, but I don't mind because in the end she is very supportive in regard to me sustaining my habbit

Here are a couple of the "girly" knives I bought to keep Yvonne happy;)

Jim Sornberger (Murray, I think Phyllis will love this one;))

Murray always a joy when you make a post:thumbup:

Usually I tell her a certain knife or whatever cost this much when it really was this much:D only cause then she wants equal spending money :thumbdn: But in the end she actually knows what everything costs that way when I kick the bucket she knows what to get for all this stupid stuff lieing around:D

Simply explain to your wife, "I can have a knife or gun for every pair of shoes you own." That quote came from my wife. Trouble is she said, one pair of shoes for every knife or gun I own."

Always, no. Most of the time, yes. There was a time when I was doing the office address thing, but gave it up. I respect my wife's taste and since we're talking about $2000-$6000 purchases, she certainly has a right to know, and tell me flat out if it's a "no go". But do I tell her about every little, folder or some such. No. But, they all come to the house so she finds out about it. I took my wife to her first show and she seemed to enjoy it quite a bit. She will often buy me knives as gifts. I guess I'm lucky.

Heck, with Phyllis, Marcel, I like them all lol. nice knives and one is not dis-similar to a Sornberger we got this year. Usually we are together when we buy or I show her something on the internet or my good friend Roger P brings something over. She always sees every knife RP brings over actually. we often have mini knife shows.

But in the end she actually knows what everything costs that way when I kick the bucket she knows what to get for all this stupid stuff lieing around:D

Now those are the words of a saavy dude:thumbup::cool:

She doesn't ask...I don't tell...

If too many boxes come in one month I do get that look (along with "You got another package today...")

Not a real issue here. My wife is a pack rat and buys more than I do so if anything it would be me on her for all the buying most of the time. I can't recall a day in the last month that UPS, Fed X or the USPS didn't drop off something for her from her internet browsing. We've always kept separate accounts though so I don't really care what she does with her money and hear very little about what I do with mine. We have an unwritten agreement that we each pay off our credit card in full each month and if and when one gets in too deep is the only time we may fight about money. Otherwise its not an issue. Having been married before I did away with 'joint' anything and laid down the law on that right quick when April and I met. She never changed her name when we married either and thats fine with me. I never understood that anyway. Seems like needless paperwork to me and based on the success rate of marriages and the divorce rates being so high we both thought it was a bad idea but I guess for the kids sake it would make a diff. We never had any. I have a son from my first wife and thats it.

Kind of like Gibbs at NCIS on TV I have rules to a successful relationship. I'll spare you all of them. ;)

Rule number one - Separate bank accounts

Rule number two - Separate bath rooms :D

I have to be honest, the wife knows about 90% of my purchases. So I have had a couple slip through without her knowing, but she is ok with my hobby. She enjoys some finer things in life, and they are not cheap either, and I never say no to her purchases.

My wife knows I spend too much (not on the customs, of course, they're worth every penny and more until I inevitably use them) and has even helped me set up a savings account for knife-related mad money so that I can continue to spend too much without dipping into the reserve funds and justifiably feel guilty. So maybe this year won't have me owning every new production model from Becker, Busse Combat, Himalyan Imports, Kershaw, or Spyderco or every sharpening stone from Naniwa or Shapton, but there will be a very exquisite bowie in a very exquisite sheath (not counting the one I just bought with last year's bonus check - with permission), a custom sheath for a production knife, and sheet music with blade-related content.

Have a client says his worse worry is one day having his wife selling his knives for what he said he paid for them but I tell ya after 32 years of marriage I think they Know pretty much everything they just let us think were getting away with something.

Cliff Parker

Early in our marriage I got my wife's attention when she spied a nice diamond in Jim Parker's knife case and I handed her knives to trade him for the diamond, and she did the trade. She's has an affection for knives ever since,

George Herron collected Ruger No. 1 rifles, and own an example in every caliber. He claimed for years that he had Miss Barbara convinced it was only one gun that he kept moving around to different parts of the house.

You might get away with that with ABS Bowies!
