A friend recently asked me what kind of sheath knife he should get to $40 or less that would be a good general field blade and also be okay for field dressing game etc. He wants something with enough size and mass that it could be used to aid in shelter building in an extreme emergency but without too big and clunky to slice well and do finer work. Around a 5" blade. I have a few ideas but nothing sprang to mind as being "just the thing". What do you folks think? Marcus

How about the Cold Steel Master Hunter you can buy it for around 40 dollars most places sell them for 45 dollars.

I have to concur with Kestral. The CS Master Hunter is a good value. For several years, I've been using a factory second that I got for about $25. I like the Carbon V steel although one has to take care of it to prevent rusting. It's pretty tough steel and sharpens easily. Another possibility is the CS SRK.

Ditto CS Master Hunter -- factory 2nd would be a great deal ($35?), esp since I believe the new models come w/concealex sheath.

Another good bang-for-the-buck would be Ontario Spec Plus series Navy Mk 2 (4.75" blade) or Parachutist (4 1/8").

Esp if your friend intends to use it pretty regularly, I wouldn't worry about rust -- he will probably be in the habit of wiping it down routinely, yes?

PS For shelter building, you can always pick up a Pocket Chainsaw for $20 or so.

Anything in the Ontario Spec Plus line.
Best bang for your buck anywhere.
A good general purpose model that comes to mind (that I own) is the Quartermaster.

Don't have the CS master hunter or the SRK but I do own many CS knives and they are excellent also but a little more pricey than the Ontario.

The Becker knives look to be a good canidate for that as well, could probably post under knives wanted and someone would dig up one they weren't using any longer.

I don't have a solution,
but I admire your problem.

I concur with Orion. The Spec-Plus line of 1095 steel knives is tough to beat.

My favorite "beater" knife is the Cold Steel Bushman. For your $40, you can get two (the run about $15 each)!!! It's a little bigger than what you're looking for (it has a 7" blade), but it's very thin blade makes it quite versatile!

Hmm I really hadn`t thought about the Master Hunter for his application. Not a bad idea. Maybe a hair small for his liking though. I thought maybe the Spec Plus Airforce Survival (Quartermaster looks good too although it`s a little bigger)or Shorty KaBar USMC might fit the bill. Any feedback on these? I mentioned the Bushman to him but he didn`t like the idea of the thinner blade stock and no guard. Keep the good ideas coming. Marcus

How about your basic, tried-and-true, Ka-Bar USMC?

Bushman - for the price, everyone should have one, great knife.

Some good beaters: Camillus USMC knife, or a KaBar (reg one), same thing. (Camillus one is cheaper I think) Ontario has great knives for beaters. Try the Marine Raider Bowie - phenominal beater. actiongear.com (Brigage Quatermasters) has em for $40 I think. They're 1/4 thick and 9 7/8 long. I love mine. It's delivered over 80+ beatdowns, still works great...

Oh, a 5 in blade. Well, a Cold Steel SRK, or the Ontario sp2 Bill mentioned (5 1/2 blade I believe) would be good ones. They go for $0 for SRK in 2nd and bout $30 for the Sp2.

Camillus Navy MKIII knife is decent as well

Meant $40 on the SRK

Ok, shutting up...

A good beater for $40.00?
Spec Plus Quartermaster

Smaller version of the K-Bar that just came out would work too.

If it's stupid but works, then it isn't stupid.

Have to say that the Bushman and SRK are both fine choices.
(As long as you can get past Lynn Thompson's Macho BS...)

Albeit discontinued, the CRKT Sealtac would make a fine choice. It is available with a clip-point blade in either a 10-1/2" or a 11-1/4" oal configuration, with a boot sheath for the former, and a belt sheath for the latter.

I got my 10-1/2" Sealtac on closeout sale for only $20. That's pretty good considering they retail for between $70-$75!

I need a bigger bucket.

I would have to agree with others and say the Master Hunter or the Bushman(get two and still save some $$)
