Decent $40 beater field knife?

If your friend is actually likely to skin game with the knife I'd look for one that is optimised for that purpose. If you shop on the internet you can find an Outdoor Edge Kodi Skinner for $36.00 at blowoutknives.com. This has a 4.5" blade of 8A stainless with a gut hook.

You're right, or better yet, get the whole Kodi Pak.

I need a bigger bucket.

Since I notice that some of the other guys are pushing the price envelope slightly I'll add another that slips in under $50.00. The Colorado Cutlery Scout model has a 5" 1095 alloy blade, brass guard, micarta handle, and leather sheath. It's a cut above the others in class. While it lists higher, I found it at blowoutknives for $48.00.

Another possibility is the Kabar warthog. I have used one extensively for camping and although shorter than 5 inches, the broad face and abundant belly make it a very verstile knife. The steel is 1095 but coated and holds an edge quite well. A sleeper.

In that price range, I'll have to go with the USMC Ka-Bar or the Ontario SP-1 version of it. It's pretty hard to beat a good spring steel blade on a beater. I used a lot of Ka-Bar's when I was in the military, and they seem to do the job.

I gotta put my nickles worth in for a Buck 119 Special. One of their more popular blades. -Brian

How about a #4 survival knife from Grohman knives. It has lots of belly for skinning and is large enough for many field chores. The stainless version is probably better as a beater (much less likely to rust).

I think they around 65 dollars in Canadian dollars. With the exchange rate they should be under 45 dollars US.
