Decent but cheap first folder for female EDC

here are just a few I've given to girlfriends and women I work with (all out of my own collection)
Opinel #6 (+1medicevans)
spyderco lady bugs
kershaw chive
spyderco grass hopper
spyderco ambisious with blue G-10
spyderco persistacne with blue G-10 (worst loss for me)
countle SAKs
Boker Mag. bull dog (very large, but $20)
boker Kalashnikov (both auto and manual)
CRKT Turtle (higher end of $30)
Buck metro
most recently a pink Ontario Rat 2

If you can convince them of the speedsafe option the rainbow chive blem can be had for 30 bucks from kershawguy. It has the safety lock slide on it .

I would second the Chive - or Scallion. Either is nice an light, portable easy to carry. Have to be careful with the speed safe but they both have blade locks to keep them from opening in a pocket.

I carry a polished SS Chive at work - along with a larger knife like a Cryo or a Chill. The Chive is not nearly as aggressive looking as the Cryo or even Chill and if there are people around when I need a knife - I use the Chive.

i do the exact same thing but with my SAk cadet comboed with a resilience or a paramilitary, but i keep forgetting to use the SAK when other people are around haha

Ima vote for a SAK.

My sister has carried some of my knives:
Small sebbie (few days till she found out the price lol)
Buck Vantage Pro
CRKT Pazoda (currently carrying it, seems to like it more than the others)
Leek (she didn't like the assist)
Bee Enlan L-01
Alias 2
I forget what others.

For 20 bucks you can get a Leatherman Crater C33, you can either get the manual open, or they assist-open. Removable clip, 420HC Steel (I've had it for months and it has good edge retention, no chips or nicks on the edge at all), liner lock, reasonably sized blade (2 1/2" blade, ouch! I just slashed my thumb open while opening the knife to measure it), i'm pretty sure your friend doesn't want some big jumbo beast blade sticking out of her pocket! it's very compact when closed, and has a built in carabiner, it does not get in the way when you use the knife, you'll forget it's even there. Easily replaceable if lost.

I haven't read the responses so if someone has already said this, please forgive me for repeating...anyway, if you are really interested in helping them acquire something "useful" for everyday type use, a lowly SAK is hard to beat. I bought my wife a Benchmade MiniGrip, and a Swiss Army Knife. She carries both in her purse, but when she has need of using one, it is exclusively the SAK. It's not that she doesn't like the Benchmade, it's just that when it comes time to choose which one will best meet her everyday needs, it's the SAK. IMO too many people get caught up on the "tactical" aspects of a knife, and overlook the usefulness of a good multi-purpose knife (i.e., scissors, screwdriver, tweezers, etc.).

In real world use a Kershaw leek or crkt tribute should do the trick. They are not quite as masculine as some other knives mentioned. If they want a heavier duty k ice I would say a rat 2 or the super cute spyderco ambitious or mini grip in yellow. Women LOVE the yellow mini grip...

I agree with Dmattaponi, a nice SAK can't be beat. My wife carries a Classic SD on her keychain and an old climber in her purse.
Nothing fancy, but very funtional. For a lady, they come in lots of nice colors. Personally, I carry a customized Deluxe Tinker (reground blades to clip points; sharpened awl to also use as a screw starter for making holes in wood, sharpened the inside of the can opener to use as a ripper for those d#$% clam packs). Carry that in a belt pouch and a Classic SD on my keyring.
There are so many varieties of SAKs, that a lady can find several that would fit her needs.
