Decided to stop buyng knves

I had a rather austere early life, perhaps partially explaining my packrat behavior later in life. I collected numerous items over the years. My handle, 'Stainz', is from my large scale model train collection. Books are everywhere, although my office bookcases are over half full of the 200+ Harbour Lights lighthouse models I have. My eclectic firearm collection is down to just some S&Ws, a couple of CZ .22 bolt actions, and a .45 Colt lever gun now. It, at least, moved in the right direction. What in the world was I doing with a revolver in .454 Casull and a single shot rifle in .458 Lott?

I obtained the display cabinets my wife out grew with her collection of goodies. Bought for display of my completed models, they now have knives in them, as I haven't finished a model in eons. Why do I have so many knives? Thankfully, I don't need a good watch. My Casio has sat in my desk drawer needing a battery since Reagan's tenure. I did get a pair of Soviet pocket watches and a 'submarine' wall clock - ~$150 total - and all mechanical. I'm a collector.

I re-evaluated my firearm needs over a year and a half ago - and reduced the brands, number, and caliber offerings. I suppose my knife collecting needs to follow. I'd love to find a fledgling H-L lighthouse collector - such a deal I'd make him or her. The trains boxes have a function... their styrofoam filled boxes add to the R-value in my attic. It would be nice to have the display cases back for models - or sell those kits. I didn't mention my woodworking tool collection.

I think the first step is to really stop collecting - especially the knives. I don't know of a large folder I have that is better than my old 110 - or a slippie I need more than an old worn Boker Tree Brand red bone trapper a fellow here sent me. A 119 and my Dad's old WWII KaBar is all I need for fb's. Yeah, but the deal I got at a local B&M store on an 'old stock' B-M 425 Gravitator the other day was sweet. Where can I get another display case? I'm as fickle about stopping the madness as C.M.!

Stainz

PS I did stop the LGB train collecting... they went belly-up - Marklin bought them - they filed for bankruptsy in Feb. No one in the state carries H-L's anymore {The 'collectibles' market died.). Two more local hobby stores went belly-up last month. Sorry for the rant!

As long as I don't get hurt too badly (not be able to sell what I have without loosing my butt) I'm not really concerned about buying knives. In fact some of the Spydercos I have NIB will bring twice what I paid for them.
I know people spend way more than I do on knives, on tobacco, pot or booze. (or even all 3!)
And they don't have anything to show for their outlay of cash!

CM--- I'm done buying too. I went overboard! If a knife is not in rotation, it goes. I will keep my Busses and Leus as an investment. I don't want to be a collector or a consumer.

:yawn:We have heard this all before.
And most people could stop buying new blades. If the manufacturers would stop coming out with all these new models, constantly. But, they won't so we may as well stuff a sock in it!

Here's the thing Jill--- I did if before. Now, I have to stop thinking of ME and put my Son's education first.

i keep telling myself i am going to cool it for a while. i was supposed to take a break back in april, but because of the evil internet,i keep finding deals i cant resist.between these forums & ebay,i find great deals on knives that are hard to walk away from. im hoping its winding down now for a while.

Man is inherently a hunter/gatherer. Add what we commonly refer to as being a bit 'anal', and you have a most materialistic approach to life. Some demostrate that by buying homes and cars they can't afford. Others have shoeboxes full of Case knives, 59 Spydercos, or 12 Buck 110s (I thought I had more...). As long as you can meet your obligations and not become a drain on me, I don't care - more power (... or knives!) to you! I will endeavor to do better... but I have to go now - get to my interstate exit to panhandle - there is another B-M I want!

I've cut way back this year, but have still bought more than I thought I would have. I have sold more than I have bought in the last year, and HOPE to keep that up untill I'm down to around 40 or 50 knives in a couple of years.

Like Jill said... as long as they keep making new models it will be very hard to stop buying any at all.

its been 13 months now since i bought myself anything sharp and pointy:)
although if the GEC guys in the traditional forum dont knock it off i'm gonna suffer a $130 dollar lapse in judgement:D;)

I just decided to only spend money on stuff I really like. No more cheapies for me inluess I really love em. I'm saving up my money more and buying more expensive pieces instead. I'll porbably come to a point where I'll stop in the not too far future.

But then I might want to trade em in for something else every now and then. Variety is the spice of life after all.

Felt a sense of freedon after I got rid of most of my collection.

I have been cogitating on doing this, but am not quite at the point of pulling the trigger. May pack up most of my knives where I can't get to them, just keep the real users handy, and see how I handle that.

I was heavy into guns, then flashlights and now knives. Bounce around between them. But I haven't bought a gun for maybe 3 years, and rarely buy a light, so I might be headed that direction with blades.

One can only have so much stuff. I have boxes and boxes of folders and fixed blades. Boxes of flashlights and charger and accessories. A big plastic bin with probably a dozen Maxpedition manbags. Am waiting now on the delivery of a Koster EDC prototype, Koster Bushmaster, Quark Titanium 2xAA flashlight, On/Scene Tactical BK2 sheath, and Busse Tank Buster (satin and black, thank you).

I was thinking this morning what fun it would be to do a giveaway of a Maxpedition Remora, Ritter Pocket Survival Pak in Altoids can, and Ontario Rat-3 with Tek-lok. Again, I'm not quite ready to pull the trigger on that one, but it sure would be fun. Especially if it really meant something to the person receiving it.

The older I get, the less important "stuff" becomes.

I've been buying the odd slipjoint but I too am growing older and feel less jazzed about getting new stuff in general. Gave some away, probably will do a little more - now I just want to get some pleasure out of what remains.

The more knives I buy, the more I stick to my Weilandized CQC7's. I think my incoming Ferrrk Commander will displace the Super 7. I'm somewhere between being an accumulator and a user. I have projects going on with Reese and a few other guys. When they come back it will be like getting a new knife even though it's still the same knife.

Is this a normal stage in our addiction? How long until I relapse? I'm giving myself 6 months.

Ha ha ha I've said that to myself plenty of times over the years. I've even gone as far as giving knives away etc bu 6 to 8 months down the line I start all over again. One day I'd like to just start making my own instead.

It would be more accurate to say I'm taking a break from buying knives.

I thought you were going to start making knives? You don't have to buy them if you can make your own!

I've made a couple of fixed blades. If I had the skill to make my perfect ideal folder I would never buy another knive.
