Deer Hunting Fixed Blade

You may want to consider watching the makers section here for a custom. There aren't a lot of $75 offerings but you might be surprised what you can find there in the $100 range.

Can't get a much better hunter than the Buck Vanguard, Alaskan Guide version. Spend more if you want to, but there's no need, utility-wise. If you really really want something different, go Dozier.

BTW, if he is an avid hunter, he most likely already has an "old favorite" knife. Your gift will be appreciated I'm sure, but at the moment of truth don't be surprised if he pulls out his trusty friend. That would upset/annoy/irk some people...

I like something sharp, short, with a full belly. but really, there is nothing like a good chert core to give you all the best tools for processing game.

that's mine - Kershaw Bear Hunter 2 - AUS8A steel - It's cheap, but strong enought and bludy razor sharp - 2 dears without cuting problems IMHO :)

awesome suggestions, thanks guys...one more, real quick...thoughts on the Cold Steel Master Hunter? Looks pretty sharp (sharp as in good looking)

Nix on just about everything by Cold Steel. Overpriced crap for the most part.

I don't think the Master Hunter is a bad knife. I actually like the looks of it, but you can get more knife for less money. If you don't like the Vanguard then look at the AG Russell Deer Hunter. You can choose between D2, VG10, or AUS 8. It looks similar to the Master Hunter but it cost less money and I think it is a better knife. I'd go with the D2.

I think the coldsteel master hunter is a good choice. Some other ones to consider are knives of alaska Alpha wolf and the Benchmade rant DP. I would also be looking at some of the custom knives onthe fixed blade custom forum as often you can get a high quality custom blade for slightly more than a production knife.

I'll vote for the cold steel master hunter. Been using it for several years to skin and quarter whitetail. Just feels right in my hand. Sharpens up quickly and easily.

I also have the spyderco moran drop point. Don't like it as much. The handle is small (even though I have small hands) When quartering I worry about my hand slipping up on the blade.

If you like the Master Hunter, then take a look at the Fallkniven F1.
Yes it is a bit more expensive.
Yes it is convex instead of flatgrind and therefore a bit harder to make sharp again when needed.
Yes, the tang comes out the back end.
No, you will never see Peter or Eric at Fallkniven slashing dead pigs on Youtube.

Schrade Old Timer Model 152 Sharpfinger, the old school ones that were made in the USA would be perfect for gutting and skinning deer. Wished I would have bought one back in the day when they were still made in the USA.

I have almost all of the knives mentioned. If it's a present, you want something nice. There a definitely some very effective knives for less than $10. I have a Cold Steel Master Hunter in Carbon V. It will rust if you let it; but it does a good job. I have a couple Doziers. He's famous for his D2 and they are good knives; but you'll have a tough time finding one in that price range. The Schrade Old Timer Sharpfinger are good knives and relatively inexpensive; but I think there are better choices. My Spyderco Moran is a good knife. Just wouldn't be my first choice if field dressing also. I have an old Buck Vanguard too. Among the knives mentioned in your price range, it would merit serious consideration - especially the better version. Ultimately, I would most seriously consider the Fallkniven F1. I have a couple of them. One with VG10 and one laminated. There are lots of good choices; but for both field dressing and skinning, the F1 is a pretty good blade.

I also like the CS Master Hunter in Carbon V, if you can find one.

Got a Moran drop point for an elk hunting buddy and he's quite happy with that too.

That Russell Deer Hunter looks very nice---although I haven't personally used one.

I bought a Boker Dozier fix blade about two weeks ago. Used it on two deer, and it worked great. Trying to trade for a Bark River drop point hunter.

I was thinking about picking up the Boker Dozier in AUS8. You said it worked great, but are trading it. Did it hold edge well through the deer?
How was the edge new?
