Defensive folder for female?

Sorry for the simple question, defensive knives aren't my thing.

A girl friend does building inspection and goes into houses under construction by herself. Many times there is no one there working, which really makes her nervous. Her first line of defense is pepper spray, but she wants a knife as a back-up, something with a pocket clip easy to open one-handed quickly.

Any suggestions for a reasonably priced production folder for a women (small hands)? Links would be helpful as I will forward her in email a few suggetions.

In advance, thanks!

Spyderco, pick one that you or her like. Good price and easy to use. One more thought, look at neck knives. Neck knives fit small hands and if a fixed blade they are ready to go! One more thing, they don't cost a lot so get several. Place a on a purse or anywere that would that would be easy to get as well as around the Neck. Just google spyderco and then neck knife and pick what you like!
PS Have you given any thoughts to a push knife? Hell, get all three!

+1 on the carry permit, but if she has an aversion to firearms try an MOD Ladyhawk or a HAK(hideaway knife) either one is almost impossible to take away from somebody without losing a lot of blood.

Awareness is ususally the best first line of defense.
Pepper spray is a good 2nd line of defense.
If she's thinking of actually using a knife, a little training goes a long way.

With no training or skill, a SPOT or Swick is not likely to be accidentally dropped while in a stressful situation. Defensive action is a natural motion.

I vote for the push knife. Simple to deploy.
Might be considered "dagger" by LEO, but a smaller female may get a break from an understanding officer.
Cold Steel makes several sizes.

Thanks for the advice on the neckers, she won't do a carry permit I am afraid (probably a good thing as I suspect she would not pull the trigger).

Any restrictions on length of blade, AO, or carrying fixed blades that we should know about?

I'm guessing she has a flashlight as a building inspector, make sure it's a good quality one. A high output one can blind temporarily and give someone a few extra seconds to get away.

Make sure she has a whistle on her key chain too.

If she is not willing to pull the trigger, what makes you think she could slash or stab someone with a knife? A knife is a lot more up-close-and-personal. You will get cut while you are cutting.
A gun can stop a bad situation from a distance. No blood spilled on you, you not cut.
I have a permit, carry two guns daily. I would much rather pull the trigger, than get in a close-in encounter with a knife.
You either have it, or you dont. A knife does not change things. It makes it more likely you will get cut as well.

NO Knife until she is trained in its use.

There was a knife fight at work a couple of years ago. Fella that pulled the knife had it taken away from him by his opponent who was unarmed. The opponent cut the dickens out of that guy who originally pulled it. That first guy carried a knife, but had never trained in knife fighting.

Pepper spray is much safer. Stick with that until training with the knife can be obtained. If that gal won't pull a trigger, she won't use the knife once she figures out how nasty it is.

I agree with Cbxer 100 percent however if all she can carry is a knife I second the neck knife option. If she insists on a folder I think the Superhawk by Spyderco is the way to go, very natural to use. Training is a must.

Well stated....carrying a defensive weapon you won't use is the worse form of false confidence. Stick with the pepper spray but don't get one of the little key chain models, get a large model that puts out some volume. You notice LEO's carry 6 oz...she should too.

She should carry 2 knives, one for each hand or as a backup. I agree some training is a big plus because most people don't know the best way to use a knife to stop one or more attackers.
