Defensive folder for female?

It's true, if you draw the weapon, you better be ready to use it.

But the idea that the showing of a knife never deters attacks is false, period, and I know, personally, that it is false. Do NOT count on it to happen, but it's something you want to happen and sometimes does happen.

Because scaring some attackers off IS a real possibility, I recommend uncoated blades. In the real situation I refer to, the person was using a black coated blade, and in the night, it was not visible until the assailant was uncomfortably close.

If the attacker(s) run away before you can get them GREAT. You've succeeded. I had 7 guys who were getting out of their car and the truck behind it get back in and take off(I don't fight 7 on 1; bad odds).
But taking it out to threaten IS stupid. You might get shot.

Another for the HAK, check out Hellzarmy's video on it, it seems like a great concept, but its fairly expensive...

Yes, I agree. Again, if you show your weapon, you need to be ready to use it. Sometimes you'll get lucky and they will go find an easier target. Sometimes not.

Thanks for the advice on the neckers, she won't do a carry permit I am afraid (probably a good thing as I suspect she would not pull the trigger).

OMG "...she would not pull the trigger..." What is she going to do with a knife?

I think that using a knife is a lot tougher then pulling a trigger. I don't believe in bluffing. If I was talking to this woman I would encourage her to be very aware and stick with pepper spray. A cell phone with speed dial to 911 and site security would help. The last thing she wants to do is give her knife to some punk.:thumbdn:

Her first line of defense is pepper spray, but she wants a knife as a back-up, something with a pocket clip easy to open one-handed quickly.

ANY pocket clipped, hole/disc/stud, or Assisted opening knife will do. The real issue is will she train with it? And if she's going to train, why not stop choosing the third best answer - a knife - and use what any professional would use?

How many of us use a third best choice when you have a better option? When you need to pound a nail, is it better to choose a rock when you have a carpenter's hammer or ball pein right there? If you need to fix a flat, it's patch, plug, or that old float tube you left in the garage?

If it's your loved one driving on ice, do you let them bypass the Saab with studded tires, the Cherokee with All Terrains, just to grab the keys to a HO Mustang?

I don't particularly like to support third rate self defense theories, especially when they offer an exponential increase in death. Being polite and nice to the OP won't help them much at the internment of the casket. It will be too late.

There are no good choices for self defense knives, simply because knives are horrible at self defense. Most people use guns first - and considering what a lot of people think of gun toters in society today, it still must be a good choice - even those with circular genetics understand a gun is far superior in self defense. And when a gun can't be there, pepper spray is a good alternative. Not the best, but good. Stats on self defense show "ANYTHING ELSE" is the second category of used items. Knives rate a distant third.

Just because a lot of us are knife enthusiasts doesn't make knives a good choice. What do the pro's carry? Gun first, another gun or something else second, knife - last ditch effort. If you really think a knife is a valid primary weapon, will you please tell me who is issued one - LEO, military, contract security?

Not.

Love them all you want, no knife is "good" at self defense - but they sure beat a gun at opening envelopes.

Kershaw Shallot for a girl. The knife size, profile, blade shape is just ideal for them without a doubt.

There are so many variants I'm sure there is no to suit her!

I'm sure guns are the easy answer to all SD situations, but the OP did ask for a knife recommendation. If I had $250+ to burn I'd get myself a pistol and some training too :foot:

Everytime one of these threads pops up 50% of the posts are off topic and don't answer the OP's question.

She wants a knife, good for her, let's help the OP find her a damn good one.

Just saying :o

J is right, this is a knife forum. But I think a good majority of those who carry a blade for self-defense are at least interested in firearms as well. But again, he asked about knives. Take her to a knife dealer and let her hold and handle fifty of them. Make sure whatever she gets feels solid in her hands and she can get it out, open it quickly and safely. BUT please suggest the firearms training and usage as well. I hate to hear about women consistently putting themselves in vulnerable positions, even if it's work related.

How about a taser if theres an issue with firearms?

Taser makes a C2 that will fit nicely in a pocketbook. They even manufacture them in colors, including pink!!! and Leopard!! If she is an outdoorsy type woman they make a camo one also. They also have holsters with built in MP3 players and the cartridges and laser sighting are very similar to the big boy Taser

Unless she gets training in knife fighting, a knife for SD doesn't make much sense to me.

I am normally a big proponent of concealed carry but I understand if someone isn't comfortable with firearms, they won't carry them. I think many good points have been brought up.

First, if she's already carrying pepper spray, look into Kimber's Guardian Angel. It has a much better range (13 ft.) than most mace cans.
Next, I second the Taser idea. As with the pepper spray, more range is better. The Taser has incredible knockdown with decent range.
Last, I agree with Sal about a knife that can be retained. I like the SPOT and SWICK. I own each. Speaking of the SWICK, I wish I had a second one so I'd actually use the one I have. HINT Sal. ;)

Well point blank I gotta say: if you want fight ,which is what self defence is ,then train to fight. I train in FMA and rbsd. My job involves REGULARLY dealing with physical altercations with individuals armed with knives shivs and whatever improvised weapons they can get. There is NO quick fix. Survival is for the strong. If your not strong , get that way. If you value your life ,act like it. My rec for a knife would be a spyderco native.

CRKT Ringer 2.

Have one myself, the 'handle', I mean the rings had quite a few sharp edges, which need to be smoothened for comfy use, the sheath is okey, but need some tune up, so you can engage the rings 1st and THEN take the knife out, simply needs some modification to be done.

My suggestion would be a PE Spyderco Dodo, they are quite hard to find at the moment, but its a well made small-medium sized folder, quality materials and a NASTY SHARP blade.

Another point, your wife needs some knife tactics basics and let her choose a good knife she likes herself ;)

I would suggest a hide away knife from
hideawayknife.com
conceals well, holds well, simple to use.
I have one in my boot for LEO work tied into the laces.
Not th cheapest knife but very good erganomics.

If she's going into unoccupied homes under construction anyone could be there for all sorts of reasons. Many not good, so I have to say about the only thing would do her justice in that situation is a .38 revolver.
She's not all that familiar with pistols, if at all and that one will be easiest to learn and carry safely and have enough thump to take care of matters.
There's just too many ways for a man to disarm her if she only has a knife. Even if she gets it out a determined guy with a 2 foot piece of wood could still handle her. With a firearm she gets it out she's gonna be a force to be reckoned with if she's willing.

Applaud this man.

the hideaway knife is designed for this kind of stuff i believe. my girl carries a crkt pharoh and or a crkt kiss. simply because shes to young to carry a gun i just got my permit when i turned 21, and when she turns 21 shes going to carry a pink handled .38 no muss no fuss. It took me months to convince her that guns arent evil, eventually tho we got to the range and she got her hands on my buddies walther p22 and now she shares my views. you just have to keep working on your girl my friend. if your unwilling to shoot someone how are you willing to get up close and person and slice and stab a man and end up covered in their blood. its graphic. the simple answer is that she wont and shell end up being the one gutted. its not pretty, its the truth.

knives are second rate SD tools
