Defensive knife, flipper or thumb studs?

For a blade to be used for defensive purposes i'm concerned less about speed of deployment but more about the reliability that the user could lock open his blade in a defensive scenario

you know how fine motor skills go away in these situations

so flipper or studs?

i could be wrong but... i thought that the flipper was originally designed to be used under high stress situations, it just depends on your prefrence.
if you havent ever owned a flipper dont just go buy one and think you will magicly deploy it perfectly when you need too. it takes mussel memory!

problem with flippers is you don't get to follow through and slam the blade into the locked position and if you have someone on you with another guy trying to hit you in the face, head, whatever you might not get to do an inertia opening or add any inertia to your thumb stud or flipper use. Little index finger flicking at a tab on the back of the handle is further from the gross motor skill ideal. It's also a more compromised grip if you need to immediately make a fist around the handle.

Flippers and assist mechanisms are play things like balisongs in my view but you could make any folder type work.

I carry a flipper, and i can honestly say that unless someone is already on top of me, i can't imagine failing to get it open.

of course, if someone is already on top of you, even a combat pistol is likely to be difficult to access

I'm a flipper guy.

My quickest and surest knife would be my Paramilitary 2 with Spyder-hole.

Thumb stud/hole because you generally don't have to adjust your grip as much to open the knife. And then u don't have to rely on an inertian opening, you can actually push the blade all the until it locks open.

While flippers deploy quickly and effectively, I would worry that you compromise grip during flipping, and have to adjust your grip after flipping. Thumbstud (or spidey-hole) allows you to have a positive grip on the knife throughout opening.

Walking Stick. (seriously)

I'd go with the flipper, because in my opinion goes faster and also acts as a finger guard when open.
