Defensive Knife?

Unless you have serious fighting skills, just carry a gun and call it a day.

Unless you live in Canada.
Or Germany.
Or Britain.
Or any of the huge number of countries where you cannot carry a gun around, even if you own one.

Well, technically you can carry one around. :p Just be prepared to do 5 years if you get caught!

Well in that case, I guess it's time to start that ninja training!

It's already started here!

You can add to the list above certain gun hating states (handguns at least) like the one I live in. Had concealed carry permits in 3 states before I live where I do now. Love my state but not it's outlook on permits.

Don't forget some states/cities in the US. Good luck trying to get a CCW in NYC.

I already started mine.

I EDC this where ever I go. No one has yet to mess with me.

99% of the people with proper training in the use of any sort of knife can use it effectivly use it in self defense

99% of people who carry a knife for self defense dont have that training.

Yep. Most folks who do carry a knife for 'self defense' or 'emergency tactical use' as they call it, or 'stabbing people' as it's more commonly known, have a lot more in common with Phil Elmore than they do with Jason Bourne - untrained, unfit, and unprepared to deal with a problem if it should arise, no matter how much they spend on knives.

Plus, as other folks have mentioned, a dinky little 3" blade might make you feel secure, but it's not really an effective tool if you really do need to kill someone. I just can't take this topic seriously when I think of a bunch of high school students/office workers who think that carrying a knife for 'self defence' is all they need to do to keep themselves all safe and secure in the world...

I've noticed the same with a lot of those folks who go to tactical gun training courses... all rigged up with drop-leg holsters and SAPI plates but they weigh upwards of 250 and are going on 45...

I carry a pistol for defense. The knives are for utility, personal enjoyment, and such. If need be, the knives could serve, but why would I go for a knife when a gun is present, unless pinned down or something.

Last year here in Nashville a police officer went into a bathroom in a little cafe. While he was using the urinal a crazy homeless guy grabbed him from behind and tried to take his gun. Luckily the office was able to grab a knife with his off hand while he trapped the gun and stabbed the guy in the leg and got the homeless guy off of him. I would say that most of us could use a knife for self defense, but it would have to be a last resort kind of thing. The best self defense would be to avoid the situation where you would need to defend yourself.

It is one of the reasons I carry my CS Large Vaquero. Most people have never experienced violence outside of public school fist fights so take it into consideration. The ability to flip a switch and go from normal, loving person to primitive, ass-kicker is most important thing. Vicious knife or even screwdriver attacks can shut people down faster than most can imagine. If you are the victim a thug/predator looks for then you will freeze and be in denial that civilized society let this happen - people project their own fear and unprepared mindset onto you when they ponder it.

Well said.

A lot like the frequent pepper spray suggestions in threads like this, talk to cops in big cities if it works on real predators or just mouth talkers/small time opportunists.

Better than nothing, but definitely need a back up.

In this day and age with the number of nutcases out there you'd have to be insane to not have something to defend yourself. I personally don't always carry a dedicated self defense knife but when I do it's a fox waved karambit carried as a secondary blade. I like the karambit because, A. It's legal where I live B. Fast opening, C. Great retention D. It's an extremely agressive cutter for an under 4" blade. E. The ring is a weapon in and of itself.

That being said obviously any sub 4" blade is not the best choice for defense but thats what the law allows in most places. So with those restrictions thats my choice. I'm a firm believer in that any knife has defensive abilities are some better then others? Sure, but any stoutly made sharp blade will do the job.

Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it right?

One other thing I forgot to write is its redicules how people feel small knives aren't effective without training. Are they better tools with training? Of course! But they are still extremely dangerous In the hands of even a child. Razor sharp steel moving really fast is not easy to deal with trained or not. Plenty of untrained prisoners kill or maim every day with tini "knives" made out of the blade from a safety razor. Even a simple box cutter makes horrific wounds. Let's all remember for a moment that in a self defense situation the need is to get away. So it's not always necessary to kill to do that. As long as you get the other person off of or away from you its a success.
Training is great! I think everyone should at least try to get some basic self defense training. I personally love the classes I take and I believe I'm more prepared because of them. But even if i didn't have any training at all I'd still want any weapon I could get on my side if I had to fight for my life. The most important part is the will to fight.

Hhhhmmm I would say that the longer you stay in BF, the less able you are to defend yourself with a knife(unlike that untrained housewife who never heard of BF). :p
