Define Gentleman Folder ?

As I am a classy gentleman, every single knife I carry is a gentleman's knife.

Today's gentleman's folder was a Spyderco Military. :)
And an Emerson Karambit.
And a Boker Bushcraft (well, that's a gentleman's fixed blade...)
And a Swisschamp.
And an AG Russell Woodswalker (another gentlemanly fixed blade).

When you take it out of your pocket, it doesn't frighten the Gentlewomen.
Very good.:)
I have a relatively small , thin pretty Lone Wolf Talon, made with beautiful two tone wooden handles.
The blade is blackened. Does the blackened blade disqualify it as a gentlemen s folder?

You ever try carrying a ZT in a pair of dress pants?

I think weight can be more of a problem with dress pants than with my tight jeans. The last time I wore lightweight dress slacks I carried a Para2. The last time I wore Dockers I carried my Benchmade Torrent 890. Even with lightweight pants I think it is still harder to carry a lightweight knife in the bottom of my pocket vs. a heavier knife using the pocket clip.

Well historically it was because the gentlemen class basically had servants to do everything for them including put their clothes on so there was no need for a large knife.

But why does it have to be small?

A gentleman's clothes won't carry a larger knife?
A gentleman doesn't want to scare someone with a larger knife?
A gentleman doesn't want to get his hands dirty cutting anything large?

gen·tle·man
(jĕn′tl-mən)
n.
1. A man of gentle or noble birth or superior social position: "He's too much a gentleman to be a scholar" (Aphra Behn).

2. A well-mannered and considerate man with high standards of proper behavior. See Usage Note at lady.

3. A man of independent means who does not need to have a wage-paying job.

4. A man: Do you know this gentleman?

5. gentlemen (-mən) Used as a form of address for a group of men.

6. A manservant; a valet.

I at least meet the requirements for definition #4. :D

I think it's pretty much open to interpretation, and that will vary greatly with the individual. There are so many options available, something's bound to appeal to you. Myself I carry either a Lone Wolf Snakewood Diablo d/a or a Piranha Excalibur or my Fallkniven juni in situations where a smaller prettier knife is suitable. Good luck and happy hunting for it.

A gentleman's folder or knife is used or carried by a gentleman or perhaps a businessman. Think... what kind of knife would a CEO carry normally at the office.
A gentleman's folder will not make a big bulge in dress slacks.
Typically are thin knives, but the length can vary.
Probably does not have a clip, but some small thin knives have clips these days.
Might border on fancy or classy in the traditional sense.
Probably will not raise too many eye brows from most non-knife people if taken out of the pocket.

I'm still trying to ascertain in my own mind what a Gentleman Folder is , butttt...........

I don't think it has serrations :)

My KaBar Dozier Thorn is the closest thing to a gents folder I have. But I still carry an Al Mar Sere 2000 in my slacks. I don't care if its tacky, the black pocket clip disappears well. I like big knives!

My gentleman's folders are a GEC Ben Hogan and the Spyderco Kiwi 4. The Kiwi had a clip. Both are very thin. Almost any traditional peanut pattern would qualify, but in general, they're too small for me.

I suppose my Vic Bantam would be considered in the same vein as the Vic Secretary or Waiter.

I disagree about no one handed opening.

A gentleman should be efficient and discreet.

My most gentlemanly folder is a Gayle Bradley Air. Perfect mix of style and performance.

There is an old saying " you can by fashion , but you can't buy style "

The Gayle Bradley Air and also the CRK Mnandi have style for modern knives .

Lately I have been routinely carrying my Launch 3 at work in "gentleman's attire" AKA a suit without a tie (I only wear ties when I absolutely have to). I have the clip still on it but don't use it, I don't to wear on my pants. Not trying to brag, but the simple fact is that a nice quality pair of dress pants costs about as much as the knife does so I'd rather not mutilate them unnecessarily.

I think what it really comes down to is that it should be a light folder of a reasonable (probably under 4") size, preferably fairly slim and all the better if it is made from finer materials like woods or MOP. I don't buy into the "must be two handed" etc. crap, there are plenty of classy, sophisticated looking one handed opening knives out there, the Benchmade Valet for example.

On a side note, I like to think that if there was a modern James Bond, he would carry something like a Benchmade CLA or a Protech TR2 or Godson...sleek, refined and sophisticated.

I think there is a big difference between a gentleman's folder, and what a gentleman should probably carry.

I don't have a gentleman's folder and probably never will. And I won't get my undies in a bunch if you disagree with me about my ZT 0452LE being a gentleman's folder, because it isn't!
