Definitely Feeling Some Love For The RAT H.E.S.T.

RAAAAHHHHHAA!!!! OK, it's killing me now. I just read your HEST post over in the RAT/ESEE forum and it got me wanting one BAD again. I think "sigh, I'll head over to the W&SS forum to get my mind off of spending more money." Aaaaaaaand I saw this. Damn it. I'm going to have to get one....

Nice review thanks.Beautiful functional knife looks very able

I somehow totally missed the first line the last time around...maybe i shouldn't surf the forum with a four year old playing 40 questions with me :o

Thanks man, it is functioning very well so far and I'm right pleased with it.

I can't help it that I like the knife, I have been looking for the right small production knives for my urban kits for nearly two years. Jeeeeez doesn't a man have the right to be happy and brag about it after finding that which he has searched two years to find :)

me thinks the OP gets commission on HESTS........:D

Ha! Now that's hilarious.

Looks very weak in the side to side prying area due to the notches and holes.

Probably great and multifunctional, but I don't trust that blade side to side, especially considering heat treatment is a tricky art.

Well... testing that is still to come, but in handling it I'm confident in the knife.

What I'd really like too know, from a H.E.S.T user (such as yourself) is...do you think it is a viable stand in for a multitool/SAK fixed blade combo?

Since that seems to be its niche, a stand alone multi purpose tool.

Do I think it is a viable alternative to the m.t./sak/f.b. combo where carrying that combination is easily accomplished? H#ll no. For me it is one of the f.b. components in a dispersed m.t./sak/f.b./f.b. combination, with the other f.b. being an Izula that should be here tomorrow. But I do sometimes carry one as a stand alone when I am just out in the woods walking around.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see it being marketed that way at all. I see it being marketed as a multi-functional tool that is a good tool to have in a hostile environment.

I know for me personally were I to be placed in what I perceived as a hostile environment at this time and forced to choose one of the tools I've assembled I'd take my chances with the HEST.

Hey Mist, maybe I missed it, but how do you plan to carry it? Discretely? Will it be an illegal carry?

I can easily see the HEST as the single fixed blade of a PSK, or even in a BOB, but it never could be an alternative to a MT or SAK - totally different functions & intentions IMO.

Discretely yes...in my pack most of the time. I'm unclear on the legalities though. You try getting a straight answer from the authorities here. It has a shorter blade length than the max length folder I'm allowed to carry concealed here locally. From what I've seen the legalities come down to context for the most part here.

Mist, last night I got a Versipack Fatboy, that will be my grab bag and where I'll carry my HEST. Do you think the sheath could be attached to the rough part of velcro so that I can stick the sheath in side the pack?

If I'm able to somehow fix the sheath to the inside of the pack (the Fatboy has a flat pocket used for concealed carry of a handgun), I would be able to draw the knife out of the sheath without having to take knife+sheath out of the bag first.

You may need to sew the velcro to some heavier cloth first but then I think you could use some heavy thread and "sew" that to the sheath of the HEST through the holes in it or maybe even making a few small holes between the screw holes in the sheath. That is to say that yes I think it could be done if you get creative with it.

I may be trimming some of the length off of one of my HEST sheaths to make it work for another carry option for me personally. I need to see if I can order another sheath for it.

Thanks for the feedback. And I forgot to ask: how thick is the sheath? Is the handle much thicker then the sheath?

MW great hands-on review (and pics) as usual!
The side by side with the Vic Soldier is especially helpful to me as the soldier is the same size as my Vic OHT.
Now that i have a better handle on the dimensions i know i need to get a HEST!
:D

I thought that picture would help give some perspective. It would have worked well for me anyway.

That is a nanostriker ferro rod. Sweet little tool, goes everywhere I do.
