DEK1

I've carried the DEK for a few days and used it for several different things ... no batoning or chopping in wood (no doubt the D3V would handle some of that in a pinch ... I just have better options for that) ... but it handles great. It carries very well for it's size and is light and nimble. I haven't pushed it terribly hard yet but it has done everything I've used it for very well. The handle is quite comfortable and in several different grips, really nice for detailed work ... I wouldn't compare the FK2 and the DEK in much other than size they are very different knives and handle quite differently.

I thought maybe it would fall in no man's land between the EDC2 being my daily carry for a couple years and the FK2 ... but it fills it's own niche and seems like another keeper. I am really liking it so far ... and I'll revisit the thread after some more time with it.

Has anyone started using and abusing the DEK yet? I wonder how it will hold up compared to the FK2. I noticed that the DEK is thinner than the FK2, but am curious how the DEK will handle batonning firewood, feather-sticking, and field dressing game.
I always enjoy the write ups that explain the design and thought process behind the knives. Could we get a formal informational post on the DEK?

I think the DEK1 is a good enough knife that using it reasonably outside of its intended design parameters, while perhaps not necessarily ideal, is likely not going to hurt anything. If I did not deeply believe the knife could handle such things, I would not own one. My .02.

you of all people would know!

as for throwing, yes. It is designed for that, but understand that it's not a throwing knife

New pants came in today, thanks @Jo the Machinist !!

don't use your DEK for batoning
Well, I have had to baton through some small branches with my EDC to get the machine down the trail when it was supposed to have had the corridor cleared already. It did great and held up fine, though it surely is not the preferred tool for the job.

With that said, if the urge struck me, I would have no problem pulling out my DEK and beating it.

that's the spirit!

as for batoning, across the grain like removing branches is fine, but no splitting using that method. If you catch a knot things could go badly

I think the DEK is going to be the companion knife to my HDFK when I feel like taking two knives into the woods.

Considering I've batoned (carefully) with a Spyderco PM2 without issues, I have a strong feeling the DEK will be fine for light wood duty, even if that wasn't its original purpose. Really enjoying how light and nimble it feels in the hand!

The is one beautiful black Dek! Maybe this means we will have a few more scale options for DEK on FunFriday Sales?

Jo told me they were working on all the micarta, so they had natural canvas, black canvas, red and black linen, green and black linen, tri-color rag, burlap, OD green canvas, double black canvas, and double red canvas.

I believe I may have the first buffed tri-color rag one.

First impressions... WOWZER THIS IS A FREAKING AWESOME KNIFE!

Awesome balance, which is more than just the actual balance point...

What maybe struck me first, and I had to drag out my FK2 to see, was it's just a little larger than I had in my mind. Much closer to FK2 than EDC for size comparison. Yet this handle (oh, this handle!!) and thinner stock makes all the difference.

(No knives were 'clacked' in taking any photos, so y'all can relax).

I treated the left side scale (shown here on the right) with a thin layer of the Obenauf's heavy duty LP to compare to the untreated right side scale in unbuffed OG green. I will let it sit for a good few days to dry out in our warm So. Cal indoor climate to see what happens when it drys out. So far, I like the richness of the color which is too fresh to tell:

For Frazer, as promised DEK1 donned with the double black buffed micarta scales, pic taken indoors at 4:00 PM with still plenty of daylight:
