Delica/Endura Are you fine with VG10?

I'm not asking what steel you would prefer that they haven't come out with yet. What I would like to ask is, have many of you seen the sprints like Hap40, ZDP189, VTOKU, whatever and said, "Nah, I'd rather just have the VG10 version".(?)

I think the VG10 version is a good steel for what I generally use a knife for. Some of the others are tempting but I've yet to buy one. Just wondering if or how much it has really mattered when buying one of the Delica, Endura, Dragonfly or similar models that generally come in VG10.

Compared to the sprints you mentioned, I actually prefer the VG-10. I really enjoy it and it’s one of the few steels I’m confident in putting a good edge on. With the right blade thickness VG-10 will slice with the best of em.

I would take VG-10 over a lot of steels. It's super easy to maintain with a sharpmaker, it gets viciously sharp and holds a decent edge. Very underrated stainless.

PS, I own all the steel you mentioned. zdp-189 IS my favorite. But VG-10 won't disappoint.

ZDP-189 version is not sprints. Delica zdp-189 can be had for $95 and compared to vg10 at $78, yes - I will choose zdp-189 over vg10.

Not sure about Endura. HP40 version can be had at $105 but the scale color is not my cup of tea. SG2 at 130 dollars is not tempting compared to vg10 at 80 dollars.

For every day use, VG-10 is a good steel. Easy to get a razor edge on and decent edge retention. Both of my Delicas are the Damascus/VG-10 core and I don’t have any complaints. My wife has a purple VG-10 Delica that has served her well.

I have Delicas in HAP40, V-Toku 2, Super Gold, & VG10. They're all interesting and I like them all but I'd be perfectly happy with good ol' VG10.

I have bought a Delica or endura or other seki spydie in just about every steel that they were released in. I absolutely love vg10. Never found any fault with it. My current 2 delicas are vg10. So easy to sharpen. My favorite shun kitchen knife is also vg10

Well I started out using GIN1, I'm perfectly fine with VG-10 :)

There have been some Sprints that interest me (Superblue, Vtoku2, HAP40) but I didn't have the cash on hand upon release, and I'm not willing to pay the secondary market prices.

First I will quote Mae West :
When I'm good . . . I'm REALLY good.
And when I'm bad . . . I'm even better.

So . . . yeah . . . VG10 will get me across the street and around the block.
ZDP-189 will get me across town and back. (I've got a Ladybug, a Dragon, a Delica and an Endura all in ZDP).
M4 . . . that's over the moon . . . oh I wasn't supposed to mention that
OK . . . HAP 40 is almost as good and I've got a Delica in that.

Yes most definitely I will buy knives with great tool steel over VG10 including the Delicas . . . (I'll even buy ZDP-189).
Why would I want soft squishy stuff if I have a choice ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
The difficulty in sharpening of the better alloys with harder heat treat (ZDP is ~ 65) is HIGHLY exaggerated.
Get some decent MODERN stones people

Do you mean the orange Delica ?
Check out the special run of Delicas in HAP-40 from Fradon Lock company. They are still available / easily found. Though they are, it must be said, pretty proud of them. I'm glad I bought mine; the steel is worth it. Comes with polished Carbon Fiber scales. Not my fave, I like the thicker FRN or textured Carbon Fiber, but I will take black over orange any day. I don't have an orange knife. Easy to find if dropped in the forest but I don't need to look at a full on orange knife for EDC. Nope, nope.

On the other side of the coin I super dig the British Racing Green FRN scales of the ZDP knives and is part of the reason I bought them.

No I was talking about the cutlery shoppe Endura with orange frn scales with black spots on.

Fradon lock delica is interesting. hap40 + cf scales for $150. I will still pick zdp-189 delica at $95 though.

I see.
Yes I was using my zdp-189 Delica a couple of days ago on some hard rubber. There were pockets of chips of aluminum and some grit mixed in. The bevel was my standard EDC polished edge.
When I got home I noticed the stuff I had been cutting was abrasive enough the polished bevel was all scratched up; it was easy to see all the scratches in the reflecting surface.

She got the job done though and didn't quit.
I'm sure VG-10, as good as it truly is, would have gotten more beat up in that case.

I had the zdp-189 resharpened and polished up in no time; no big deal . . . I enjoyed it. It didn't even take diamonds to do it; Shapton Glass was all.

If I could only get spydies in VG10, I would be happy. It's more than an adequate steel:thumbsup:
mitch

Vg10 is a good steel after the burnt edge is removed. I've found it chippy on some thinner knives I've owned.

I wouldn't mind a Delica in vg10 at all. I think I'd probably get something a bit harder but tbo I wouldn't have a problem with taking vg10 delica if some harder steel wasn't available.

I've always liked the Delica, currently have an endura in SG2 which is great, if not a bit big in comparison to the Delica.

Vg10 is not my favourite steel in its tier of steels. That said it is still a good steel and I like it.

I think it is fine for the Delics/Endura but I would love to see ZDP become the standard.

Delica/Endura Are you fine with VG10?

Yes, of course. Why wouldnt I be. Would be silly to turn up ones nose, as VG10 is a fine steel. VG10 makes for relatively affordable knives in a quality steel. A VG10 Delica is one of my most used knives.
Im also a big fan of my Spyderco in ZDP (its not a sprint though).
As for V-Toku2, thats a greats steel and my Endura in that steel shot to the top of my favorite user knives.
