I have been wanting something like this ever since I got my first delica. It is already a great knife but with G10 handles it would be amazing. Any thoughts?

I think that maybe a limited edition would be made with all sorts of cool things, however I see the delica/endura as the standard spyderco, everyone knows the delica/endura and they are a symbol of spyderco's extreme value. I think adding G10 would take the price up, and kind of corrupt the idea of them being the standard knife of spyderco.

Just my thoughts on it. I would love to have one, but I don't see one coming.

I thought about the price increase as well. However, didn't byrd knives come out with a version in G10 and it was only a few dollars more than the standard version. Even if the delica went up an extra $10 it would still be worth it for the better scales.

Have no need for G-10. I´m VERY pleased with D4´s FRN. It doesn´t dry out/ soak up moisture or oil like G-10. It´s very grippy, feels better for me than most of my G-10 knives. With the nested steel liners it surely is strong enough. Plus I like the different colors it comes in.

Even though I think the D4 is damn near perfect for its size and weight I would like to see an additional stronger version of it with the same contours same liners and scales but a bit thicker full flat grind VG-10 blade and stronger lock - a D4 on steroids.

Best wishes,
JB

Something like this:

It's a C05GS Standard with G-10 handles

Nowadays I would take the Caly 3  (a good deal better IMO)

Peter, nice Standard you have there, oldie but goldie. The Caly3 surely is a great knife. Its quite strong for its size. But I have to put it in the same category like my Ocelot. Both are no full screw constructions and both are not demountable while keeping the warranty like the D4. Besides the Caly3 has a 50/50 choil what makes quite a difference for me to the D4 that allows to slide with the index finger forwards and backwards. Its just a different ergonomical concept with the choil. I found out that I like the D4 concept the most.

Best wishes,
JB

JB, have you tried a meadowlark or cara cara? I found the Delica and Meadowlark small and uncomfortable, but the meadowlark had the large fore-finger area like the Delica in addition to its choil. I think you'd be able to use the same grip on the meadowlark, while having your G10 (And at half the price of a Delica). I too like the large fore-finger area, but it works a lot better for me on the Endura sized handles.

Vivi, thanks for the hint! I used to think that there are so many Spydies left for me to get first. But more and more I read good things about the Byrds. I was suprised they even come in G-10. Their steel seems to be not bad either, especially the serrations. Lately I read this Cliff Stamp Review about the Cara Cara CE. He wrote the serrations outperformed the plain edge by far. Only the Byrd Hole has to grow on me a bit further. It´s getting harder to get around the Byrds any longer.

The bad thing with the Byrds is the same as with Spydies for me. I thougt backlocks would be too old fashioned and too unsecure. After some experiencing I now love backslocks. I thought serrations would never be an edge for me. Now I like the feeling to cut with them and like their exeptional performance. I used to think only G-10 would do it for me.

Now I´m also a fan of FRN and like micarta and even SS. My size range became bigger, from Kopa to Police. My current EDC is D4 Wave and E3 (or Paramilitary) plus Spot Micarta (or Swick or Emerson La Griffe). So I´m sure I could adapt to the size of the Meadowlark and of the CaraCara. That leaves more and more models on the to get list - bad thing. :D

So as not to hijack the thread any more, I really would not be sad about a D4 in G-10. Maybe it could be a tad beefier and stronger. :D

Best wishes,
JB

Yeah, the Calypso III is real hard to beat. It is everything I need a Delica sized knife.

Now we´re talking. :D Would it come in common D4 bladestyle? How about a 3 or 3,5 mm thick full flat grind D4 blade, something around Caly3 in strength? This would be another thing than just green G-10 instead of FRN. Who else would like it? I´m open for PE, SE or CE and VG-10 is my preferred steel.

Best wishes,
JB

D4 in Foliage green G-10 with full liners (skeletonized of course)?

sal

Sal, I have said it before but I wish to repeat it:
have you considered using stainless steel spring holder (like SS versions have(or like even SS and G10 Byrds have)) instead of FRN? (maybe just for ZDP Endura if it represents a problem?)

I agree that a steel piece to hold the spring would be a good thing.

And, G10 would be great in about any color.
:)

I recently got talked into doing a rebuild on a Tasman Salt PE in .040 ti liners and orange G10 over those. Now those that know me know that I rarely work with G10 due to my asthma because in the past the stuff has sent me to the ER if I make one little mistake working around it. (yeah it was with a respirator, I just took it off too soon)

Point is my wife went nuts over it, absolutely loved it! But I've gotten more contacts since posting that one from guys asking me to let them know when I'm ready to do another job using that same orange color than I ever have with any other color I've ever used. Also, everyone that saw that knife in person before shipping it back to the owner wanted it. Fact is I could have sold it a half dozen times before mailing it home.

Its in the STRprojects album in my homepage link BTW but its one of those pics don't begin to do justice to, especially the way I am forced to do them currently. Its not one you'd lose easy but people sure liked it and no one noticed the menacing look of the sharply curved blade or Wave or anything else except that bright orange color. I was by the Wal Mart booth the other day where they have all the knives and one of the guys rushed out from back there just to ask me to see it again. The look on his face when I told him it now resides in the UK was priceless. He was like awe man! I really wanted my buddy to see that one. I guess his bud was over by the counter.

Anyway its obvious to me that would be very popular.

Making a ss back-spacer / spring holder for an FRN model defeats the purpose of the lower mfg costs. The back-spacer in SS has to be formed, surface ground, heat treated and polished. Better, IMO, to add those mfg costs to a G-10 (or other material) that already requires the labor and crafsmanship in producting the handle.

Hi Sal, thanks for taking the time to debate.

Since you are already producing SS versions of Endura (and Delica) can you approximate how much would it add to the cost?
