Delta-3V edge maintenance on Light Choppers

I put this little thing together this morning before work. It's a condensed view of the process that I generally use to repair damaged edges and for general maintenance.

Justin's new LightSaber is getting the love.

Makes you realize just how small that secondary bevel is on the LC!

I use that same Norton 3-stone, but I pulled the coarse crystolon and replaced it with a hard black Arkansas. I seldom used the coarse stone, and nearly always go finer than the India stone, so now it gives me Medium Crystolon --> India --> Hard Arkansas, which has been much more useful to me.

Thanks for vid :thumbup:

this is the competition ground prototype of the LightChopper, quite a bit finer of an edge for sure.

in the vid, I only used the medium and fine stones. For really damaged edges, I'll start off with the coarse stone. I've retired my leather strop and just got some new leather and that's generally how I finish. Like I said, this is pretty condensed- I got a good edge, but I like em nicely polished, so there's more work yet to do.

this D3V is very sharpener friendly, and quite unlike Elmax, S35VN etc. It's just like 1095 for sharpening, in my experience

Oh that's one of the racers. Sweet!

I'll admit that I do not quite have Elmax figured out. At least not Busse's Elmax, it seems very hard. I believe my steak knife is 62rc.

On the other hand, I've had good luck with 3V. It seems to hold an edge for a long time and requires little effort to get back in shape.

Elmax is a huge PITA. Stroping it is brutal as well.

It's worth it for a knife you almost never use, but want a stainless for carrying regularly. Like a combat knife I guess.

here's how she performed after that quick resharpen job you just saw;

It cuts well. It's a great design and excellent execution. I'm not sure how far you plan to take the sharpening, but do you think it will improve if you do? Or just polishing for looks?

I'm hoping for silk scarf severing sharpness :)

hair whittling sharpness ;)

I have faith in you
