If you pay >$100 for a knife, that knife better be NEAR perfect!!! There are so many examples of GREAT knives <$100, Ka-bar, Mora, SAK.

With the raw materials costing < 20% of what some of these knife companies are charging, their knife better be NEAR perfect!!!

So the Coach purses of the knife world, Sebenza, Microtech etc. you better come correct!!!

Cowboy Up!!!

Edit: Forgot to add I'm talking about production knives not handmade customs.

So in other words...production knives charging handmade custom prices!!!

Perfect huh?

I have several knives that are, in my opinion, perfect. They cost substantially more than $100 or even $500. If you want perfection, you have to pay for the time it takes to achieve that perfection.

Ah yes, the unrealistic expectations of customers who have never run a business or made a product themselves...

j agree.

While I love my sebenza, it is not worth the $400 I paid.

my sushi knives cost half that and better materials and fit and finish, did I mention WAY better steels?

No matter what the cost it, if you are mass producing a product you are never going to get perfect. What matters more to me is how does that company handle you when you do get a knife that needs to be replaced or sent in for repairs.

My sushi knives can be returned if manufacturer made mistake on knife, however they usually come perfect.

even my sebenza, the heel was over ground but I sharpen so I corrected myself.

Great or perfect? Show me one production knife company that produces 100% perfect knives at any price point.

Thanks for the opinion. I think what's up is not the cowboy but his ride, and the aft end at that...

I've been around both guns and knives long enough to know what was possible with regards to quality and how things are now.
Back in the day if it was not perfect, it was removed and resolved or disposed of and not sold to consumers.
Manufactures actually had integrity and therefore cared that quality standards where kept extremely high.
I've actually never had a bad Spyderco. I'm sure that there is a possibility someone else might have had one but I have not.
There might be a gray area between fit, finish, construction and possibly the materials being utilized ?
There's a massively huge difference between Chinese ebay mall ninja imports and a quality piece.
When I pay for the good stuff I expect my hard earned dollars to provide me with the same quality, the same performance and the same look as the cherry picked one used in the video or the photo. I expect it to be as near perfect as perfect can be. If the manufactures reputation is such that you expect good materials, craftsmanship and attention to detail, then it had better be there or it will be a return. If you settle for garbage, shoddy workmanship or anything else less, that is up to you but you end up poisoning the water for the rest of us that do demand quality.

I don't disagree with anything you said. Your opinions seem to be based on a solid sense of reality. I'm not so sure the OP's comments and expectations are as grounded as yours.

*cough* ZT *cough*

Still not perfect.
I can find fault with my Umnumzaan.
I can find fault in a $2000 custom.
Bring me what has been lauded by thousands as the greatest, most perfect knife ever, and I'm sure that I'll find something I could nitpick over if I felt like it.

Life is imperfect though.
Machines are imperfect.
Humans are especially imperfect.
So, I have to accept some level of imperfection in the imperfect creations of imperfect beings.

I have heard that some katanas are perfect and not a single fault, perfect polish balance and saya.

of course these are museum pieces.

in those times, offering less than perfect blade would be terribly dishonorable.

In todays time, profit.

I'm sure with your heartfelt encouragement they will all start producing products that are perfect. . . . . . . . . like you.

Sounds like myth to me.
They were made by humans.
There'll be imperfections.
They're just really, really good.

Oh geez...this thread is going to go downhill fast.

In my very limited time on this planet, nothing is perfect, regardless of price. Companies strive for perfection every day, but even if they achieve it 99.9% of the time there will always be that .1% that gets away. As my grandfather used to fondly tell me: "Paul, stuff happens...its how you deal with the stuff that defines you". And that, ladies and gents, is why we have warranty services...
