anybody else get denim stains on thier titanium scaled/slabbed knives?

easy to clean off , but still bothersome

Yes, I get them on my Sebenza. As you say, they are easy to clean off, but I don't even bother doing that anymore.

I've got stains in my denims. Not on my knives.

Weird, I carry Ti or a seb all the time in jeans. No stains.

You sure you don't mean that the Ti gets "polsihed"?

How do you remove the "stains"?

yea i mean stains. as in ...stains.

the blue dye of the denim gets rubbed onto the beadblasted Ti.
its kinda wierd cuz i got some beadblasted SS and this dosent happen.

a wet or damp cloth is all that i need for cleanup.

i dont bother with my strider anymore. but it still bugs me when it happens to my leek and alias. them's my goin' out knives.

Nope.
I've never even heard of that happening before now.

I guess I learned something new today.

Do you wash your jeans after buying them? I could maybe see a brand new pair of jeans doing this, but not washed jeans.

I can see either new denims, unwashed or profusely sweating causing some bleaching of the dye. It may also be a low-grade dye or fabric and it's could be overdyed which may take several washings to fully bleed the excess out.
Otherwise, never heard of stains caused by denim.

the only pair i have that doesnt transfer onto my titanium is that light sky blue color. (acid wash is just a tad bit outta style :p )

the rest all range in darker colors closer to indigo.

Otherwise,

its gotta be that i guess. apparently more washings than i anticipated.

I'm a bit intrigued by this, is this just a little strip by the top? With your folder clipped in a pocket, isn't it touching just the cotton of the pocket, except right at the top where it rolls over?

Drano, what kind of knife do you carry that has a Ti surface that picks up stains from your blue jeans. I'd be interested in finding out what alloy they use. We use a couple of different Ti alloys at work. And I wear blue jeans in the evenings. Like to pick up a piece of scrap and carry it a spell and see if I can reproduce the phenomenon. Wonder if it's something in the finish. I'm not aware of Ti itself doing this, but then I never tried it either.

What brand?
the ones in question are:
a Levi's redwire (color is 'relic' or someting) , several pairs of 527s in colors i cant recall or find, but its in the darker range.
and a cheap pair of mossimo's i got at target

yea thats the part that marks up my strider. but im talking about the patch of denim on the 'back' of the pocket that tucks in behind the edge before transitioning into the cotton.

the Ti is bead blasted. Strider PT, zdp leek, and an alias II
i think its mainly the rough surface that is the main contributor. (but that still doesnt account for why beadblasted SS doesnt stain)
i think i may clean off my PT and see if i get any transfer. cuz the Finish has worn smoother than when i gave up on it.

the more i think about it, the more im thinking its only the darker dyes (obviously:jerkit: ). since apparently most people dont have this problem. (this is also assuming that most people prefer the lighter shades of jeans)

well, FWIW i wear levis or wranglers daily and edc either a emerson CQC12 or a spyderco Ti ATR daily and i havent ever gotten any stains on my knives, and i wear the std dark jeans usually,

I also wear Levi's daily, and have been for years for that matter; and have NEVER experieced EVER getting any stains on any of my Ti knives.

So Drano,

I talked to one of the metallurgists at work who specialized in titanium. He's never heard of ti pickup stains from levis, but he brought up an interesting suggestion that I hadn't thought about. Ti can pick up oil from your hands and can change color due to that. This is especially true if the Ti is not anodized. The oxide layer that forms on bare Ti is somewhat porous. Oil can fill in the porosity and cause a darkening of the surface. A bead blasted finish increases the surface area and would maximize the effect. Also, some folks have sweatier palms than others. So two people could handle the same kind of knife. One might cause it to change color. The other might not.

So I got a question that I don't think I saw answered. What color is the staining? Is it blue? or is it just a darkening?

If the Ti just turns dark, we think that what is happening is the Ti is picking up grease or oil from your hands. When you scrub the Ti, you remove the oil and it turns light again until it picks up more oil.

If the Ti flat out turns blue, then we are at a loss to explain it at this time.

nope, staining is definately blue. it comes off and it comes off blue on the damp napkin when i clean it off.

with the couple of people that chime in with levis, makes me come to the conclusion it may be the quality of the dye.

the cheap target jeans make sense, and alot of the levi's 527s colors are apparently limited run or something, so they're probabbly not using a tried-n'-true dye formula, like the 501s or such.
