Derivation of HI Forum posting names?

Maha-Sam-Atman on eBay. One of the names of the Bhudda.

Maha = Great (roughly)
Atman = Soul (Roughly)
So Great Soul Sam.

Woolygums in the games, Tribes II and Unreal Tournament. From a movie "Whire River Kid." The lead actor considered that most people he saw were not really people. "They be Woolygums."

Vajrayana on Ethnographic Edged Weapons Forum - from the Tantric Tibetan Bhuddist tradition.

My nick is my real name of course :D

I live in the heart of the big city but I've deluded myself into thinking that I'm a country boy at heart.

Here's a moment in history on my very first posted topic on the forum...

Bolster replacement?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I bought a Khukuri from a forumite who friggin' NEGLECTED to mention that the top part of the bolster has a crack in it!!!

It runs from where the bolster meets the handle all the way to the where it meets the blade. So basically it's runs the length of the bolster on the top!

Not a hairline crack either! 2 mm at it's widest. Looks like it has been filled in with brass though as a repair.

Question is... can the bolster be replaced?

dammit, what's that saying? a fool and his money...?

:footinmou

Mr.BadExample ... is the title of a song by Warren Zevon (RIP). The song is darkly humorous and doesn't really describe me, but my sig is one of my favorite quotes- that sometimes a bad example can teach you more than a good one. So thus the name.
The picture is a nice little knife I bought from Craig Steketee. Ancient mammoth ivory in a nice blue-green color.

LOL, great story Dave!

Also the main character of one of the best SF novels of all time: "Lord of Light" by Roger Zelazny

Too bad ole Roger isn't with us any more - I understand Roger liked a good cigar, a drink, and good conversation betimes. He would have probably fitted well with this crew at HI.

And while I enjoyed Lord of Light, Roger spent an awful lot of time exploring godhead and its relationship with man. Creatures of Light and Darkness also comes to mind.

I remember this thread. Well at least it didn't take long to get it straightened out! ;) :D

Another good one. A LOT harder for me to understand, though.

Yeah, Roger was fascinated with super-human characters. Or at least, larger-than-life. The only one what differs, IIRC, is the protagonist of "Doorways in the Sand".

The crack he was referring to was the join line where the kamis solder the sheet brass ends together...

This is Pan Tau - one of my favourite tv-characters when I was a child.
Later when I did archery competitions I signed the list with the short sign for my last name (Tautenhahn) - "Tau" and as we had lots of Czechs in the archery club someone asked where "Pan" (=Czech for Mr.) Tau was. It was me - but I had not recognized until then. So this nickname came into existence.

The TV Pan Tau is a very nice elderly looking man (see above) who can shrink by touching his bowler hat. He does not speak but watches, listens and helps his friends in wise ways. I like him. I doubt if anyone in the US knows this TV-character - but you can be sure you missed something if you do not know him...

The avatar I found in a search of British regimental insignia, and it reminded me of several knives I own, and seemed distinctive.

I don't suppose you remember which regiment it is? It always seemed familiar to me but I assumed that was because it was an SLR bayonet and now the symbol of the infantry.

As for my name, well Sturmman Zaum is the name of the character I 'play' in living history events. Sturmman is my rank within the unit (now Unterscharfuhrer) and Zaum is the German translation of my real surname.

As for the Avatar, it is the cap badge of the Royal Engineers, a badge I wear with pride!

That bolster reminded me of the very kind and thoughful forumite who purchased a couple khuks second hand. He wanted to know how to sharpen them, as they were horribly disfigured. I asked if Kendo was the salesman, but he graciously said he wouldn't divulge the name.
What came of that? One was sent to a soldier, I think.

..and as for new things, when I recieved my Messermeister Santuko, it appeared the blade had been butchered by the final sharpening process- entire lengths were missing out of it. I even touched some of the gaps with my finger, verifying they were not sharp. Good thing I still have my finger- the 'gap's turned out to be pure black carbon, underneath which was bright sharp edge. AFter cutting, the entire edge shown as one steel ribbon, and I would not like to put my finger there.
I suppose you want the story of my moniker, how I was bitten by a rabid chip munk, no, wait, it was a MONKEY, yeah, that's it, and it escaped from the carnival....

Mine is in reference to the ancient Greek style of combat. Later it gained popularity with the modern military installation.

The number represents my favorite caliber.

AK's forever!

I got the nickname "Steely" in college for my brutal honesty and sometimes less than compassionate disposition. Not mean, mind you, just stating the point of views that were there but not voiced. Furthermore, the great bulk of my college buddies are beer bloated sloths or girly girls. Thus, anytime anything had to be moved, whether it be dressers, televisions, or jerk ex-boyfriends, they'd call on Steely's guns (i.e. arms) to get the job done. I kinda liked the name and it stuck. kinda sounds like an adult movie actor's name:)

Ripper really is my given name (one little mistake and they never let you forget!).
If you look at our mug shot here, I'm the handsome dog (if I do say so myself) in the middle.
The guy on my left has trouble remembering his name sometimes (inebriating beverages and dead brain cells) so I have to do the posting here for him. His name is Greg Brannon
Regards,
Ripper.

I forgot to add: Console-geek too. I played Soul Calibur until my thumbs dropped off.

RPGs ain't dumb. It's those loud UBER-geeks or stone-quiet-goth-wannabes that make us RPG-ers look bad. BTW, isn't your avatar of Voldo, a character from Namco's Soul Calibur series of 3D fighting games? I'm actually a member of The Singapore Soul Calibur II League!

Redvenom; my son and I are looking for a new computer video game. We liked Heretic and Heretic 11, we liked Diablo, what is Soul Calibur?
