Describe your vision of a S!K folder

I am amphibious. I write, eat and fight lefty, shoot right or left equally well, can throw both (right is more accurate and powerful though). I guess this comes from the fact that I am a right eye dominant lefty. Also both my parents are right handed so I had no lefty to teach me how to do stuff. I carry my knives lefty because at least 10-12 hours (most days) I have a side arm on my right hip.

I would love for an S!K folder to be ambi.

Here is my vision.. I would have to go with a big titanium frame lock. Micarta scale, CPM3V about .125 thick and 8 inches overall. The handle would be similar to the new style blades. I'm sure what ever Guy comes up with will be bad ass....

I am sort of digging this overall design. Looks like you are putting a locking mechanism for the frame lock, much like the Lion Steel SR-1, which would be mighty cool. It will never be as strong as the 3.5, but it would definitely be a folder that I would carry. I have gotten away from carrying folding knives pretty much all together and usually have a fixed blade or two in a pocket sheath as well as a neck knife. But the folder is clearly more concealable. I might have to go into my folder drawer and pick something out to carry tomorrow.

I'm hoping for the GSO-7/7 inspired blade profile myself!
And I'm planning on getting one of each 20CV and an S90V!

Ide be good with a lockback. They are pretty strong actually

It all depends on how that notch is cut and what's supporting it

S!K is now located ~50 miles down the road from Buck. I haven't always been impressed with their products, but I am a fan of my paper-stone 112 Ibex as well as the BuckLite 482 & 484 folders - simple, VERY light, decent edge-geometry. If Guy went to Buck to make his folder, I'd buy in.

That said, those lock-backs are pittance beside a Triad-lock for durability. If Cold Steel is planning on moving production back to the USA, maybe that knife should be a Survive! For example, the Ultimate Hunter is not far off Guy's designs:

But I love a good Axis-lock as well as a good button-lock for ease of use and reliability.

I look forward to what sees the light of day

My requests would be for a compact design - i.e. handle no more than 1" longer than the cutting edge length (I'd also prefer a blade around 4") - and to avoid thumb studs or disks, or any other opening mechanism that gets in the way of the blade's ability to cut.

What about a butterfly style folding 4.1!!!! Damn near strong as a fixed blade and easy to make.

Yes - I've posted about the need for a hi-quality user balisong before, in this forum and others. I'd love Survive or some other quality manufacturer to build something like this in a good, tough steel, and for a lot less than Charles Marlowe charges for his customs.

I'd have a hard time asking Guy to make a folder when I found everything I want in a ZT0560.
I've have a spyderco in S90V and it wasn't all that. Then I tried a Kershaw in S110V.. also not worth it. They both take for ever to sharpen and the the edge, while sharp, doesn't have the "toothyness" that I want for for cutting carpeting, cardboard, banding straps, zipties, etc. So if anything I'd like to try one in 3V.

I haven't tried any of the Spyderco mules in different steels but I'd be interested in other's opinions if they've had something special come out of that program.

No, I'm still not giving up my 4.1 in S90V. I don't use it, but it's important to S!K history.

I quit carrying folders almost two years ago. A fixed blade knife will always be more capable than a folder in any aspect you can measure except for conceal-ability and ease of carry (I cannot belt carry at work). I have spent this time becoming acclimated and accustomed to carrying fixed blade knives in pocket sheaths and around my neck such that normally I have three on me at any time. Having said this, I think that a folder in the weak side pocket is something that I can easily go back to without any issue, and displace a small fixed blade in the process. So I am warming up a little to the concept of a S!K folder. I'm in no hurry though. I also own the ZT0561, and I have to say that it was one of my favorite folders. I liked it better than the Strider offerings, and I could never justify the cost of the 0561's counterpart, the Hinderer.

Are we long lost brothers McVeyMac?!!
I'm with you 100% on your thoughts. I still want to check out a Strider SNG though.

Yes we are brothers, Survive! brothers. I have both the SNG and the SMF. Good knives, but any comparably sized fixed blade will out perform it. I can get my 4.1 opened much faster than either Strider:witless:.

Titanium handle to make it very difficult for the blade to separate from the rest of the knife. Preferably a round handle too like an Opinel.

I took the liberty of drawing up a sketch for a strong multi-piece knife. Let me know what you think. :D

I think that you are asking a pretty short section of tang to carry a great deal of lateral loading.

Just in case.......

FSIR, i think you have misunderstood this subforum. Its not a general survival knife subforum. Its a brand specific subforum. That brand would be " Survive! Knives", a small manufacturer of high quality outdoors oriented fixed blades. The owner doesnt make a folder yet and this thread was intended to provide a place for S!K fans to discuss the possibility of a folder made by S!K.

Welcome to our little part of BF!! Please dont take my comment as an attempt to brush you off. Hopefully I was misreadyour post.

Here is a pic of my S!K knives

Thanks for the clarification, Riz. This wouldn't be the first time clarification was helpful.

Fsir, nice design! I've never designed anything so I'm pretty impressed.

After reading some threads about Guy being lefty and Ellie dropping some hints about a coming folder from S!K, I started thinking about what it would be.

My vision is a folder with a profile similar to a GSO 3.5 with a 20CV blade and G10 scales. I would be ecstatic if it was 3V. Now here is the kicker... What kind of lock would Guy use? A liner lock? A frame lock? A lockback?

Well we know, Guy is a lefty and would want an ambidextrous lock. We know Guy would want it to be really strong and durable. He likes to sell his blades for reasonable prices. No offense to Guy, but I think that right now Guy doesn't have the capability to produce a folder in numbers high enough to meet the demand that would be present and keep the price down. So I started thinking about who guy could have make the knives for him. Well I know Benchmade makes knives for HK and makes Bradley blades. I figure there are other small brands that they make that we might not know of right away.

What if Guy made the blades, sent them to Benchmade and we got a Folding 3.5 with the Axis lock!!!! I would be on that like flies on fecal matter!

Now you know my theory. What is your vision of a S!K folder???

The axis lock is in fact patented, in all variations. They also do not license out the patent.

Frame lock with a flipper :-)

There's several companies with the ball or bar-type lock, like Benchmade has in their axis. For example, Spyderco has the ball-bearing lock (like in the manix), SOG uses their arc-lock (like in the vulcan folder). So I don't think you have to give up on the concept entirely. They all seem very similar in use, are ambidextrous, and claim to be extremely strong. Maybe we'll get surprised with some new variation. I do think the ambidextrous locks are great and easy to use, but I do like frame locks alot too. I'm a lefty also but I just use my right hand for knife work.

Even a simple button lock could be ambidextrous (and being a lefty, I'm all for an ambidextrous knife!), and even though Benchmade doesn't license out the Axis lock, he could try to beg/plead/haggle his way to an agreement similar to HK.
