Desperate for some Parks 50

Tough Quench is McMasterCarr's fastest quench? I looked at that too but thought it was a touch slow.
Tough Quench is Brownell's stuff. I have used it to good effect on 1075, but it is a mite slow for W2.

Maybe I was confusing Celsius with Farenheit, but it seemed to me that the Houghton oil had a lower flash point than Parks. Aside from it being a REAL quench oil, the thing that I have noticed about Parks is that it seems to have much less of a tendency to flare up than Tough Quench or homemade garbage quenchant. I don't know if that has more to do with me using a deep vertical tank or not, but it is noticable.

Houghto-quench K has a higher flash point than parks, it is a true quench oil. It was recommended to me by Houghton specifically for 1080/84/95 and other very fast quench, low alloy steels. Their flash point is significantly higher than heatbath's product. They also have no flash point solutions if you want to go that way.

Stop using denatured alcohol and gasoline as quench ingredients in your 'goop', Joe... I promise your eyebrows will grow back!:D:D

Welded up a new quench tank last night - getting excited for Darren's new shipment!

I love my tough-quench for stuff like O1, L6 and even 1095, but it's just too slow for W2, and thicker pieces of 1084...

I spoke with the Houghton rep on the west coast and they would not sell in less than drum quantities. I even tried to beg a little:rolleyes::jerkit::rolleyes:. Oh well. I have my 5 gallons of Parks and if i need more I'll get it from Darren. At least the guys from Houghton would talk to me. I called heatbath and offered to buy in 50gallon drums, even had the credit card out but they would not do it. Did not even want to talk to me after they found out I was a small operator.

Just keeping a bit of pressure on MR Ellis:D, getting a bit thirsty here.........

Hang in there guys, I'm still waiting to receive it....as soon as it gets in, I'll have it repackaged and ready to go within two days...everything's ready on my end. We're getting enough in that we won't run out again for a while.

:)

Thanks Darren, You rock! I have heard since i came here to the HOUSE OF TRUTH, all kinds of good things about PK50, and have just wanted to try it out so bad.

If you want Houghton quench oil in 5 gallon units, contact the Pennsylvania store (Valley Forge, I think).

Houghto-quench "G" is what Brownell's packages as "Tough Quench". Houghto-quench "K" is as fast as Park #50 and holds up better. I got this information from Scott McKensie, Houghton's metallurgist/quench specialist (posts a lot on SFI Metallurgy forum).

Tough Quench is good oil for the type of steel it is designed for. I still have 3 gallons in a big 19 inch turkey roasting pan for when I decide to use some of the O1 and 5160 I still have lying around.

Sounds very much like the company line...no offense, but Parks 50 is an industry standard for a reason....and before you rebuke, I'm not just saying that because I have invested so much time and money getting more in...if I thought the Houghten stuff was better, I'd carry it.
