Did anyone receive the new Cold Steel DVD titled "absolute proof"?

Bill86....I'd think a Gold member that had been around a few years would realize that this topic has been hashed, rehashed, hashed some more, and generally worn out in every conceivable way.

As has every single variation of...
"What is your current EDC?"
"What do you think about carrying knives for self defense?"
"Are customs worth the money?"
"What do you think of _______ steel?"
"Do you like natural handle materials or synthetic?"
"Kydex or leather?"
"What's the best sharpening system?"
"How old should my kid be before..."
"Why do sheeple..."

And so on, and so on. If a moratorium is declared on familiar topics and only searches are relied upon, these forums will be dead in three days, because there really isn't that much new to talk about; and what seems new to you has likely been beaten to death by others who've been here a hell of a lot longer than you. Simple solution: if you're tired of posting on a subject, stop posting on it. There are others, always, who're eager to pitch their thoughts into the mix.

That kid is Andrew's son. You must be watching different DVD's, because they busted boards with the Espada spine whack overstrike tests.

First of all I'd like to say I've been drinking BUT

:D lol - I think I'm going to start every conversation/email/posting with this opening line - funny dude :)

That said - I too was very skeptical and put off by CS's marketing methods. It just seems cheesy. However - I tried to ignore that to determine if they actually make decent stuff. So far I've purchased the ti-lite, the Rajah I, Black Rhino and the Scimitar. Overall I am impressed - they seem well made and the tri-ad lock is SOLID... I've also had all the Arc Angel balis over the years and they were awesome - wish I never sold those. And for sharpness - all the new Cold Steel blades I have recieved have been RAZOR sharp - just as sharp, if not slightly sharper, than my spydercos. (I am NOT knocking spyderco - they are my current favorite and do a helluva job with everything) - just saying, the rajah and black rhino I have are hair-splitting sharp.

But - I agree. While the methods used by LT and his crew at cold steel may prove the strength and durability of their knives (to an extent) it does at times come across like they are just trying too hard to appeal to the 14 year old crowd (no offense meant to any teenagers out there :) - but you know what I mean. Some of the tests are cool and it can be entertaining..

Cold Steel's new video?

Could somebody post the "kicking a dead horse" smilie?

I've bought and sold Cold Steel products, still have a few Trailmasters and a City Stick, sjambok, assegai, etc. They are good quality and I got good deals on them.

Has anyone ever seen a marketing campaign from any brand that states "HEY, BUY OUR STUFF! WE'RE JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE!"

It appears you haven't checked my post count, have I really been "around" for a few years? show me a post of mine from 08 or 09 probably isn't a single one. I registered took a few years off the knife world to pursue guns and high quality liquor ($75+ bottles) and now I'm back I've probably been active for 6 months out of 3 years.

Also what does being a gold member have to do with any of it? I was only a gold member for 3 months / 3 years.

As to beating a dead horse or "old topic" read the titled I'm talking about their brand new dvd. I'm sure they've done this for quite a long time but you have to imagine some people have more hobbies than just knives and don't catch EVERY SINGLE THING in the knife world.

Exactly T1mpani understands, everyone wants their opinions heard everyone isn't there when it was first posted. If we were you would be reading 8-10 year old topics that never end. Pick your poison this ones not as bad.

Also it seems quite a few people chimed in both ways, whoever said the size of the guy testing it doesn't matter I disagree. That guy can put much more force than an average human being, could I at 5"11 160 pounds cut that rope with whatever CS knife he was using? Maybe....maybe not. But it looks poor when you have to use someone so big and are trying to prove a point. Also I agree with the choosing their knives for different tests and not putting them all through the same test.

I have around 15 Cold Steel folders and have found them to be well made and finished, consistently razor sharp and the locks all inspire confidence. As well, if Andrew Demko has tossed his chips in with Cold Steel, that says a lot about the part of the company that we don't see.

I own a sampling of most of the major brands and have not been disappointed with any of them, so perhaps I am a Fanboy of everything. I couldn't give a' rat's rosy red' what others think of CS knives, because in my experience they perform as advertised and to me, that is 'proof' enough.

Some of the most admired and experienced members on Blade Forums own Cold Steel knives. Perhaps the most important question is to ask 'why'.

My opinion is that the DVDs are a little over the top, but the quality is generally pretty good on CS products, and the videos do somewhat demonstrate that.
They use AUS-8 for the reasons they state, it is reasonably tough and can be made very sharp. Of course, 420j2 is tougher, but that stuff is crap in a knife blade.

Cold Steel is still right up there with Benchmade and Spyderco in many regards.

I really enjoy their videos. If I feel like watching the idiot box and there is nothing worth wasting my time on, I hit the DVD and watch LT botch cuts and then look smug while holding up his blade. Good stuff.:)
Heck, I wish I could work for Cold Steel. Ya gotta admit, having a job there has it's bennies. Where else does the boss say "Grab some swords. We got a truck load of pigs, tatami omote mats and watermelons that need cutting up."?

I will continue to give Cold Steel kudos for putting out big boy toys the other knife companies won't touch.
Where else you gonna get a Sjambok, a two handed khukuri machete, a dedicated Boar Hunting Spear and a War Hammer?
Additionally, have ya noticed mega folders are pretty few and far between these days outside of CS? (Their Rajah and Spartan folders are incredible buys, IMO.)

CS fills a niche in the arena of non-firing weaponry that you won't find elsewhere. Love'em or hate'em, we are far better off with them than without them.

This thread reminds me, I REALLY want that Heavy Duty Cane Sword.
Gonna have to shuffle the budget a little next payday.:D

The marketing is a little over the top but to be honest the one I saw on YouTube was entertaining to watch. I take it FWIW and lately I have heard a lot of good things about their knives, specificaly the knives using the Tri-Ad lock which is said to be one of the strongest on the market. Now if they only make some knives in higher end materials at reasonable prices I may buy one someday.

I wouldn't dismiss CS products out of hand just because their marketing is so hilariously over the top. I'm not sure how they can charge as much as they do for knives using relatively cheap steels (~$200 for AUS-8? Really?), and I don't really see a need to own 80% of what they make (at least for myself), but they can position their product however they want, and if I like it I'll buy it regardless.

I just view their newest dvd last month and I did find it quite entertaining.Compared to their earlier "Proof" VHS which was downright boring where they go on and on about how great their knives are.The only thing that kind of bother me, were the graphic footage of their swords chopping mounted pig heads.

I learned long ago that, if an advertisement doesn't appeal to you, then most likely you aren't the target customer. Nothing drove me more nuts than those Vonage TV commercials a few years ago with the woo hoo, woo hoo hoo. They made me want to turn off the TV and do something else.

In other words, don't take it personally. The marketing is aimed at someone else.

As has been said before too, maybe a lot of people are leery of cold steel's marketing but however you call it, it seems to be successful or Cold Steel would have gone belly up long before. You may or may not like their products but they are a business and a good one it seems. Marketing is what it is an if it works by bringing up sales, why should the ridicule of a few afis stop them from putting out their videos?

The marketing is just that, marketing. It appeals to some and not to others. I've found their DVDs informative and even entertaining. It's not often you find a company willing to do a DVD covering the techniques for using a Saber or Cutlass for self defense;)

As far as size being a significant factor in one's ability to cut? Complete and utter BULLshit....I'm a very tiny guy, 5-6 and a buck fiddy in weight but I can cut the SHIIte out of anything and I'll go up against a guy 100 lbs. heavier than me in a cutting competition any day. Unless he's a pro I'll probably beat him. Cutting with a knife is all about technique and speed. Course, it helps if your knife is sharp as opposed to a butter knife;)

For the price and quality, I've got no problems with CS. I think they're fine and I would love to one day meet Lynn Thompson and shake his hand. Good Guy IMO. From what I've seen anyway:) I've got one of his knives in my pocket right now actually.

I actually did a bit of reading on him recently. Sounds like he's one of the nicest people you could meet.
And as much as he is criticized for it, believing in the products you sell isn't a bad thing.

Comedy of the year! Jk hey it's free and great for a laugh. You gotta love cold steel.

I find their videos hilarious and hope they continue to create comedy for the knife community. :foot::thumbup:

exactly my thinking!:p what really makes me laugh is the throwing knife video...i'm not saying i'm an expert or anything but Lynn consistently manages to hit the target with the pommel of the knife- intended? possibly, but not likely;)

HA! I think if I were Lynn I would have demonstrated several tip first hits. However, I think that was deliberate since they had just finished discussing how hard hitting the butt could be.
