Did I Get Hosed?

I traded this knife to Joe Manco... I was completely unaware of the defects... when he pointed them out I was afraid I had purchased a fake... I bought two of these from a reputable dealer a few years ago... I guess I don't examine my knives too closely... btw I have over five hundred (unexamined) Spyderco knives - and I have never really worried (until now) about buying a forgery-type knife...

I will certainly do whatever is needed to satisfy Joe on this trade... I have not even put his knife in my collection cabinet yet... I respect the members here... and I want very much to stay in good standing with the Spyderco fans in specific and the Blade Forums crowd in general... I do have the correct box... I checked after the mistake was pointed out in this thread... I have 2 of the green G-10 Para IIs and that must be the box for one of them...

all will be hunky-dunky at the end of this ordeal, I swear!

I have absolutely no ill feelings toward you and do not think you intentionally did anything wrong in our transaction. That's wh I never brought your name into it. Il get back, working now.

I would probably keep the 20cp version you have, especially if you are looking to collect all the pm2 variants. I am pretty much like pharmagator though. All my knives are users and I don't examine them that closely and I probably would not have noticed the issues. I am picky about functional issues but i rarely notice cosmetic stuff.

I am glad that you were able to get to the Spyderco factory to have it verified... I have your back in this... I will abide by whatever you decide...

I just want to make sure that everything and everyone is good here... a good reputation on an active board like this is worth it's weight in gold, imo...

Don't worry, we will work it out. I pm'd you.

You say you're interested in collecting all the sprint PM2's and you traded a unused 2011 20CP for a 2016 M4 because it had some cosmetic issues that others mentioned are somewhat typical of that particular model, and ask what would I do. I would have kept the 20CP, and thanked Spyderco for stepping up with such gracious offer !

How many 20CP models are available for sale today, next week, next year vs. M4's ...?

Trading such drastically differing knives indicates this was probably more about collectables than performance (as you mentioned). Chances are that 20CP will go into an employee's collection, or get notched and resold as a second forever decreasing it's collectivity value factor :-(

From a collectables perspective, I would plead a second thoughts attempt for a trade-back before it's too late. Those character marks that pop out under magnification could be moderated (massaged and smoothed if they really bother you) or simply left as character marks related to the history of the time & model.

What's important is how you feel about your new Jade M4, NOT what any of us feel ;-)

Appreciate your follow-up here, and once again a great example of Spyderco taking care of a customer (well ... not really even a Spyderco customer as relates to that specific knife, remember we are taking about a second-hand or more previous owners knife from a product run 5 years ago).

Thanks Spyderco ;-)

Regards,

He did not trade this knife at the factory. He traded his new M4 PM2 to get this knife from another forum member.

Trust me on this Esav, it is HARD!!! :o I can't go to the SFO without dropping at least $100, and I'm only about 15 minutes away. :foot: To make it even worse, my in-laws live less than 5 minutes from there.

I would have made it a USER!!! I wonder if they would sell it now? Are you saying that they traded you a Jade M4 there at the store?

Agreed, see above. I need to make a phone call...

Tell me about it !

Aren't those laser marks, not grind? My old spec S!K Factory 1st GSO 5.1 is covered in them along the entirety of the spine, which is disclaimed on their website. Don't manufactured blades often come with crooked tapers to avoid them laying flat together during processing...I thought I read that somewhere here on the forums. Ignorant questions I suppose.

Quality response from Spyderco and I'm glad you members are working it out.

I would not worry that much about it, especially that others have stated that their knife is similar. It is a production knife and as Lance stated put it to use and soon the other marks on the blade/handle will out weigh what is in hidden places.

I have a Grey Para just like that one with crooked jimping. Since I use all my knives, I just take a mini diamond file to straight them out. The steel sure is tough, and took me a while to get it fixed.

Well, I guess I was wrong about it being a fake. I'm not really sure how something like that could get through QC, but whatever. It does not sour me at all on a knife brand I consider to offer a very good value for the money. I am glad that you were close enough to Spyderco to get the issue addressed in a timely manner and that the fellow you got it from appears to be a stand-up guy. We need more folks like that in this world.

I don't know how many were made but the 20cp very rarely comes up for sale. The highly magnified photos make it look pretty bad but a better judge would be how it looks when you hold it in your hand. If it looks reasonable that way then it might be good enough to keep for a collection.

Again, I'm not mad at the seller/trader but I don't consider this magnified. I have seen a lot of people saying that it is a "magnified" picture it's not under a microscope. If I received this new from a known retailer new 5 years ago I would have sent it back. But it's not, it's 5 years later. It's not the sellers fault, I truly believe he did not spot it and just put it in his collectors cabinet. I'm still contemplating if I want this piece in my future collection. If they all are like this then yes I do. I know they don't come up often and if I decide to wait for another and takes a long time, I end up paying more, and it shows up the same, that would suck, lol. That's why I asked what would others do. Also, the scales are kind of dirty and won't clean off. Probably from sitting on display and not hiding in a dark box. I understand all this. One last shot(ok two) at what I do not think is magnified.

They can't all be like that. Maybe the tools were getting eaten up quick and some of these were produced before they were replaced. I dunno.

I snapped some pictures of mine... I would not call it NIB anymore...

"The scales are kind of dirty and won't clean off". Check. I ditched the gray scales that looks constantly dirty many moons ago.

Rough spot on tang and wonky bottom jimping? Check.

Top jimping is OK, but a little bit skew.

None of these cosmetic issues bother me. The knife has excellent action and lockup, and has been a faithful and reliable user for 5 years.

If you traded a $160 M4 PM2 for it, I think you got it for a steal... Use it like you stole it! :D

If I was you (OP) I would keep it in my collection as a perfect example of why Spyderco discontinued use of that steel.

Asked the sender to just send me the correct box(and I'll send the wrong one back) and I'm keeping it. Sorry for all the drama. At least I learned a lot about this particular model. Thanks everyone.
