Did you notice the RMJ American Tomahawk?

I received my Model 1 today. I couldnt make up my mind about the nylon vs wood handle and ended up getting both. They are both exceptional. They kydex is fantastic, although I will be making a leather sheath/pouch for belt carry. The molded texture on the nylon handle is grippy but not rough. The edge on both hawks shaved my arm and they whizzed right through paper. RMJ dialed in the geometry and compared to my older VTAC these things are going to function as exceptional camp tools as well as a weapon if it was needed for that purpose. The pick on these are not sharpened. Its clearly designed to punch holes/breach/dig and function as the “multitool” side of the hawk. I will probably do a little photo review on these once the fall and camping/hunting season arrives. Overall my impressions are very positive. There couldnt have been a better company to makes these things.
 
I received an email from AT noting that retail stock should be available by September-ish as the company gets off the ground. The recent sprint runs sold very quickly ... I was able to secure a wood handled model, and it appears to be a quality item that is packaged and presented extremely well, consistent with all RMJ products. I hope it is the first of many models to be (re)introduced by AT in the future.
 
I had a forearm diameter branch break off a tree in my yard from a thunderstorm. I broke out the wood handled model 1. 4 good whacks (2 on each side) cleanly removed the broken branch. I then removed all of the smaller limbs from the main branch. Each small branch (1/2 to 1-1/2” in diameter) were easily removed with one chop and then the main branch was sectioned and all of the remains thrown on the brush pile. RMJ has dialed in the edge geometry on this hawk for wood work and the mirror polished shaving edge would still shave after this use. The hawk stayed secure in hand and did not twist or glance with each cut, even strokes that I took at awkward angles on purpose. Over all I am really pleased.

Not everyone wants a rusted , what date of 1977 was it made and the relative humidity , needs to be refurbished axe head found at a swap meet laying under a oak tree sold by the man who made it. o_O Rant done. Lol:D

Looks solid , 190$ kinda steep but cheap for a. Rmj. I think I may need one.

Hey guys - Ryan Johnson of RMJ Tactical and yes now American Tomahawk. I appreciate all the kind words about the Model 1. There are a lot of great questions here and I plan to address them in an upcoming podcast. Long story short - we noticed that the brand had been inactive and found out that the hawks were no longer being made. I felt that the design is not only iconic but important, important enough not to be relegated as afterthought part of a huge lineup from companies that don't care about it's amazing history. We purchased the company from Ferhman (an amazingly good dude) and started the long process of revamping the brand with the RMJ touch. We had the injection molds remachined to match the texture on the Shrike, and completely made new drop forging dies. Each hawk is CNC machined, differentially heat treated and hand sharpened. The kydex is killer. The blade geometry is lean and mean. All in all I wanted it to be the best version that has been made. We have a great team of folks put together to make American Tomahawk go - I think fans of the design will be happy to see what's coming down the road. Still using the hawk in the back yard for fire pit prep and breakdown of pruned branches. The edge has held up incredibly. No deformation, no dulling. It still shaved hair, just not as clean. A couple passes on my strop and it was scaring hair off my arm before I even touched the blade to them.

R Ryan M Johnson are spare wooden handles going to be available should the need ever arise?

I went for the synthetic handle since I already have one of the original ATC La Gana Hickory with an Eagle Caracci sheath, made for Brigade Quartermasters back in the day.
 
I used the hickory handled Mod-1 today to make wooden stakes for the kid’s badminton net. The thing sectioned the 1/2” thick stick in one hard chop for every cut. Then using controlled downward chops on the sections as I held them vertical on a log, I cut the points. I choked up and gave a little tap to start the notch and then carved with the edge like a knife to finish the notches. It took about five minutes to make six stakes. This thing continues to impress me.
 
The nylon handled Mod 1 is unstoppable. The hickory handles????????? Not so much. They could do a significantly better job hanging these. The vietnam style hawk is my favorite “tactical” style hawk and I was so tickled when they came out. I still love them and this design is the only hawk I want to use and carry. I have to say though, maybe due to differences in humidity, both of my hickory hawks are loose on the handle. Maybe they handles shrunk? Im going to make new handles for them and rehang them. Even after the loosening, there isnt another hawk I want to carry. I wish RMJ/ATC would make some leather sheaths for them
 
Wood is going to loosen especially with heavy use....To use and abuse get the nylon.
 
I’m on the fence between replacing my Jenny Wren with another one or this AT. Thank you guys for providing your usage insights!!
 
I noticed that they sell replacement hickory on the ATC website. I am going to rehang my mod 1 soon. I’ll let yall know how it goes
 
I haven't used mine as much as Riz, but it still is an impressive fighting and utility hawk. As $ permit, I'm going to spring for the synthetic handle model as well. From my own usage and 2c opinion, the Model 1 is an excellent choice for a BOB or vehicle kit, and is as cost effective as many other available hawk options.

Also, though several months late in commenting, it's great to see RJ on here chiming in. I'm sure he's busy at SHOT this week, but it will good to see him again sooner than later.
