Different vibes from Kershaw, Spyderco and Benchmade

The Hawk designs are the only ones that count. I'm looking at their product line on knifecenter in another tab as I type this and I can say that all their other folders was designed, not just to ignore the needs of the small unwashed, but to actually exclude them. We don't just go away if you close your eyes to us Kershaw!

I mean, holy shit, the Zing and the OD-1 are liner locks. Is this 1986? We're going to have liner-locks as ambidextrous now? Not to mention the OD-1 has all the sex appeal of a pair of high-waist bloomers.

Notice how the popular designs, the Junkyard dogs, the Chives/Leeks, the ZT series, all the popular designs are exclusive to righties. We get the fourth-string "OD-1." No one is going to be prowling eBay in 15 years trying to snag a "Zing" because they heard how it was the crowning achievement of the knife world in 2009. There won't be any OD-1 sprint runs in a few years, they're boring designs that probably got drilled for lefties on accident and resulted in the guy in charge of that station being fired.
Personally speaking, I think Lee Williams and R.J. Martin make some pretty hot designs.

Then again, maybe I need to deeply insert a bitter left handed suppository and act out like a smart mouthed teenage troll to get a better perspective.

Fire tubes 1 and 2! Running hot straight and normal...detonation on 1, detonation on 2. Target is burning and going down. ;)

I really like how Spyderco is always experimenting with the new steels. I think that in some ways pushes their competitors too.
Other than that... I could never get into Spyderco style blades. Too "different" to my taste.
And, another thing I don't quite understand, how a company so innovative with steels, can be so conservative aboutntheir locks. Pardon, if I missed something lately, but it's either liner lock or lockback, if I am not mistaken.

Or a ball, or compression..
But really, liner and backlock work, and they work well.

I equate Spyderco with Subaru.
Not the prettiest car on the lot, but a tough reliable vehicle,if treated right, it will go for miles and miles and miles. :p

That is pretty damn good analogy!

Benchmade does seem Hummerish doesn't it.

Yeah, thats a good analogy. I dont think of Spydies as being particularly military either.

Absolutely! Spydie as Subie (Subaru). Tough, dependable, quirky looks but MOST features are there for a purpose. :thumbup:

You forgot about -

Frame compression
Liner compression
Frame lock
Ball lock
Notch joint
And magnetic

Yes, Spyderco is great with their steel variety, but Kershaw has incorporated a number of steels that Spyderco has yet to use.

I think of Spyderco as mad scientists. With all of their shapes, steels, handles, locks, and clips. Size ranges. From the Bug to the whale tool. Mule projects. It is amazing the number of different products they work on. Manufacturing in 4 countries. Wow.
They sure encourage many designers.

Benchmades seem cold to me. Cold and dead. I do own a few, and like them. They just seem cold and dead. I know I'm weird, sue me!

Kershaw is techno. Speedy opening, all metal handles. Big weird flashy designs. I own some of them too, I don't mean any disrespect.

Kershaw = high tech, good urban carry and travel knife...Rav 4/Matrix
Spyderco = all business & class...Camry
Bechmade = a military feel...Land Cruiser

Can you tell want auto maker I prefer!
