Dilemma: trc in m390 for woods?

Il
For the same use case I got these: Brisa Bobtail, NKD Lizard, Brisa Necker. They are also available in scandi grind for added toughness. I am making the kydex sheaths.

I like trc. But m390 is not tough. I also live in Australia and know how hard our wood can be. I guess it depends on the task you had envisioned for it?

Have you checked out the Spartan Enyo? I own their budget version is aus8-a, a steel which is plenty tough especially given its geometry and thickness. It is corrosion resistant, plus is coated but it wont hold much of an edge

I saw that aus knife sales has these in today! I’m keen on everything except the geometry, looks VERY thick… how do you find the cutting?

Try out a Spyderco Mule. It’s the perfect size and blade shape for outdoor use. You can find them in all sorts of different steels on the aftermarket. This one happens to be 15V BBB. I have an M398 that was released recently that is very comparable or even better than M390. I have about 7 Mules.

Just get the knife you want in M390. I carry a Shirogorov in my pocket most days lately and have had no issues. While hunting I’ve now trimmed plenty of branches off trees when setting up in a new spot and they’ve also handled every “camping” chore I’ve needed a knife for. I’m renovating a house currently and my M390 knives have been great cutting all sorts of packages and materials open, I’ve even been laying materials on the subflooring or along ceiling joists when in the crawl space to cut them and I’ve only been finding small rolls or flat spots on the edge here and there that work out fairly easy with my Sharpmaker. I also have a strop loaded with diamond emulsion that works great for those times when I just want to quickly clean the edge up.

As long as you’re not throwing the knife into trees or batoning the blade through stuff I think you’re gonna be just fine getting what you want.

Thank you all for your replies and advice

I am now just in the final decision phase

The dilemma is now
- Do I buy the speed demon which Ive wanted for a while now, or
- or save another hundred or two for another small sebenza (which I certainly don’t need)
- or another hundred or two for the trc urban tactical which i have only just discovered while looking at the speed demon and have fallen in love with the handle shape of…

A knife will be bought!
Thanks again guys!

I feel this post…
I used to carry a winkler belt knife everywhere in the woods, then switched to the blue ridge hunter, but honestly the last couple years Ive just been carrying a folder like a small sebenza and whatever fixed blade I have rarely makes it out of the pack, i think mainly because I moved somewhere a lot colder and I’m less excited about stopping and sitting still for hours to do bushcrafty stuff… I just still love fixed blades though, but Ive never managed to not get by with a sturdy folder, although I did just lose one that i assume got yanked out of my pocket bushbashing through some scrub which didn't excite me…

You must have some meaty hands, or like wearing gloves. Wouldn't take 4 hours to become uncomfortable.

No gloves
But 4 hours was an exaggeration sorry
I’m one of those people who don't complain about sebenza thumbstuds…
I’ve used a non wrapped non handled izula quite a bit no issues… but maybe you’re right and this will be a bad idea… only one way to find out!

I mean if it works for you... to each his own :) but the weight/space savings seem negligible for the amount of comfort added imho.

I traded my izula after a couple of feathersticks ;)

Not to a real man with manly hands 🤣. You’re right, any real work reveals skeletonized handles as regrettable. Except for throwing knives, but that line of work seems to be far and few between nowadays, thanks Biden (kidding). Of course, an old master here carried his knives in a black tube sock and that could be used as a handle wrap if needed.

I’m pretty sure Stonehocker blades does runs of the Spike in Vanax. He does different runs in every blade steel & scale materials he can get his hands on. Cheaper than the TRC (although it may have gone up a bit from the $165 I paid a while back).

That looks good, The little reiff edc would be a good option for what I need, but not available in aus and shipping is killer (100usd for fedex)… the trcs ship from lamnia for maybe $13aud

What about the South Pole model ? More of a Jack of all trades knife than a dedicated bushcrafter. If you look around you can find the South Pole in V4E steel ( incredible performance with TRC heat treatment ).

If you want smaller - the Rokka is nice , holds its edge for a LONG TIME ( 80crv2 or N690 with excellent heat treatment ).

Rokka should be cheap to ship to Australia ( I think ) .

I just bought the speed demon 60 seconds ago

There are a few other trc knives I was very interested in but i had to get it from lamnia and they didnt have the others in stock - we have an australian dealer of trc but their prices are high, like the urban model which i like if in stock at lamnia is about 500 aud shipped but from local supplier is $695

So ill try this one out and maybe look into more later

But hopefully not… pay the bills instead

I think I’ll be happy enough with the skeletonised handle, honestly now that i have a 4 year old my serious sit and bushcraft time is severely limited and i find myself just using whatever folder is in my pocket far more than a fixed blade… and that is why i took so long after starting this thread to actually buy the knife, because i was also looking at getting another crk which I definitely did not need!

Thanks again for all your responses

Can’t wait for this to arrive, i think it was the right knife to get as Ive wanted to try one for a while, not just a quick impulse buy
