Dip bucket biohazards

:barf: :barf: Tom put some scotch in it..:)

FWIW regarding the Bleach.

Think folks misinterpreted our suggestion. The idea was to use bleach to kill stuff in the water before dumping it and use bleach to clean the bucket.

Not to keep bleach in there all the time.

I was just thinking about this issue the other day. Do you think that the metal dust-filled water is safe to dump in the yard? Is the sludge at the bottom going to kill anything? Or maybe the iron is good for plants. :) No real grass in my yard (AZ), but we've got trees and shrubs. Any idea what the impact of this stuff is seeping into the ground?

John, I'm one of Va tech's master gardeners. I've been fiddling with re-use of things for years. As a rule, if it rusts, it's OK to toss. I also like to use it in the compost pile.

I would be concerned about heavy metals. I use a lot of lead to balance swords and have to pay close attention that it doesn't get dumped. All lead scraps and dust get melted.

Don't dump copper or brass dust either. You can use it to kill certain insects, but you need to be careful where you put it. I don't want to sound like a tree hugger although I guess to a certain extent I am, but we have enough people dumping things that will harm the environment already.

If it has been whizzed in as Mark suggested....dump it in the lemonade at the next Sheriff's picnic:D :D You can also dispose of lead, copper and mercury there. Not much of brain damage there:footinmou

if I recall bleach in contact with iron/steel makes acid

Chlorine (as in Clorox bleach) + Iron = Ferric Chloride aka the etchant so many knife makers use.

That bleeding sore may not be due to bacteria but a reaction to the dusts produced from the grinding of various materials. Zinc dust (a component of brass) for instance in a cut can cause some nasty side effects.

Ferric Chloride, that's the word I was looking for thanks Chuck:)

:D
I gots to git me one o dem rags on a stick ta go wid my soap on a rope!
If'n its a big enuf stick it'll float in the river so's I don't lose it.

So, I can make my own Ferric chloride? Hmmm, I like that Idea.

Peeing in the slack tub? Not me, I am saving mine in old 2 liter bottles because:

1) I am too lazy to walk upstairs and use the pisser
2) I heard that stale urine from a red headed child has magical quenching properties.

Well, i am not a child and I don't have red hair, but i am going to try it anyway.;)

I have two 5 gallon buckets filled with nasty water. One in the forge room and one under the grinder. I just throw all my cigarette butts in them, I think that kills just about everything, plus makes the water look brown like iced tea. Heck one bucket has been "collecting" for about two years now.

Peeing in the slack tub might be a good idea.
Urine in antiseptic.
I was reading the SAS survival manual and they suggested weeing on cuts.

Snixon, I've heard the same thing in fact Capstick suggests peeing in ones eyes after being sprayed by cobra venom! :barf: This could be a great business opportunity. Mix pee, Crisco, cigarette butts and scotch.
You would have a great quench that can be used to cure cuts, cobra venom spit and when warmed could be drunk for a relaxing toddy! HMMMM

It could be called: Beefeaters quiss n cure !

I have several books by John(Pondoro)Taylor, a professional hunter from Africa. In one of them, he got sprayed in the eyes by a spitting Cobra. He said he was in so much pain that it was almost unbearable, and his vision was fading fast. His tracker threw him on the ground, and pee'd in his eyes. Taylor said it started to clear up almost immediately.
If the same thing happened in this country, you'd probably go blind, or die. ;)
