disappointed in my new navigator

I will say that I will pay attention to the sharp edge complaint on any future variations and I thank you for the heads up.

Did I read that correctly? There is the possibility of a Carbon Fiber
Navigator coming to a store near you? :D

I have an blue/green almite navigator and it has no sharp edges, is not large for a 2inch blade IMHO, in fact is almost too small to get a good grip on, and finally is not all that stiff to open. I also paid like 60 bucks for it, and think it was well worth it.

Easyrider,

Does Pete know about your interest in Spydies?

Yep, and does he give me crap about it! I can't say I'm a big Spyderco fan, but the Navigator has really impressed me. The Wife carries it now. I bought her a Cricket since that is what she wanted, but after using it she didn't like the blade shape, so she got my Navigator and I'm using that Prototype I got just before Christmas. Now Pete will certainly give me more crap for using a Proto. :D

Well, once you've used that proto down to it's spine, it'll be time for another knive. And that's when you'll be able to buy a Navigator in S30V :) because I seriously doubt that the 705 is going to leave its 154CM skin anytime soon. :grumpy:

I'm afraid you are correct Thom. :grumpy: Now the idea of a Navigator with S30v and Carbon Fiber is something I will fully endorse!!! :D

Just got the Navigator from SMKW (those idiots said priority post while they didn't send it at priority post, it took like 3 weeks to get here).
I only found that the sharp edges are on the slots that were cut in the handle. Otherwise, there isn't any sharp edge that I found on the knife. Even the "horn" on the spine of the blade isn't that sharp and doesn't need to be rounded IMO.
This is one handy little knife. Cutting performance is pretty darn good for a knife that size. I can actually grip the whole handle, despite its size. Actually being able to see the inner workings of the knife through the slots is a bonus.

Sal, I'm all for VG-10 steel. I ahve been very happy with my Navigator, but the idea of a limited run carbon fiber edition really excites me. Are there any plans for a sprint run of carbon fiber Navigators? If so do you have a timeframe? This year or next year?

As stated before, I did got my Navigator recently.
I've just shaved my rather light beard (I don't grow one that quickly) with the Navigator. By no means it's as safe or as clean as a safety razor, but the Navigator out of the box is sharp enough to do that in a pinch.

Hi Easyrider. No plans at this time. I'm plannng on a concept model to show at the SHOT show for more input. I'm just "fishin" for interest.

For me, sprint runs are fun. We do a small run and they're gone. No advertising, no catalog planning. A small number of ELUs get exactly what they want and the piece becomes an interesting collector item for the future.

The problems with a Sprint run are; insufficient sales and a bog in inventory, planning the extra pieces, Complaints from dealers and ELUs once they're gone.

If we get enough interest in a CF Nav, we'll make a short run. How many is always the question.

When you do Sprint runs are any of them numbered or all of them?

Thanks,

Thank you Sal for the answer. I'm glad to find out that a sprint run depending on interest of a prototype is possible. I certainly want one. I've said before that until this Navigator that I wasn't a big Spyderco fan, but this Navigator has really impressed me with its ability to handle cutting jobs like a larger knife. The handle ergonomics are probably the single biggest factor in regards to its performance. I'm glad to see the pattern survive with the Meercat and Pride, but I think the Navigator is a better knife than either of those. A carbon fiber version is a nice way to cease production of this little fella. Thank you again Sal for letting me know a carbon fiber prototype is in the works to drum up interest for a sprint run.

Just got back from SMKWs.I was going to pick up another Navagator.I looked at four of them and they were all kind of rough.1 had a grind that was burnt and the others had rough edges and small nicks and bad places on the scales.Still not to bad for 29.99.These were in the new boxes and the others I got from them was in the old blue boxes and were perfect. If anyone lives near by,they have a good sale going on in the showroom right now.

LOL :D

I got one of the SMKW Navigators several months ago and I have been pleased with it. I did not notice any sharp edges on mine so I wonder if there were some QC issues at the end of the run?

Anyway, Sal really tries to make the customer happy. Spyderco, as well as Buck and Busse, continue to get my business even when I don't actually need another knife. After all, If you don't support the good guys there won't be any left.

Thanx Easyrider. Appreciate the kind words.

Actually I labored over the Navigator design for many months. Big knife performance in a small knife was the design goal. The combination of the finger choil and the angled "pinky shelf" at the rear of the Navigator design was a breakthrough for me in design understanding. You might notice "variations" of the idea in the Lil Temperance and Salsa designs.

We've used the pattern in a number of variations of the Navigator. I expect we will refine until we reach the best combination. I know that I like the CF variation, but my tastes are sometimes too far "out there" for general public, so I like to get input.

Notos, The Navigator is 1 of my all time favorite Spyderco designs, in fact I have bought more of this model than any other.
Having said that I know full well all designs don't fit all human hands the same.
Tell you what my friend, box it up and mail it to my shop and I will take the sharp egdes off the hump and round it off a tad for you, no charge at all except shipping, sorry to say there's not much I can do about the Almite finish but I'll be happy to buff the blade back to it's original finish.
My addy is on my email :) Ron
