disappointed in spyderco

I live in concel carry state i own 4 hand guns and have no permit. I choose too carry knife instead, gun is too easy too do something stupid with. But, i worked the south chicago and gary indiana for 10 years, stait commision people hand me hundreds and lots when i close them.

murder capital of usa? i guess i do.

I never worry - weird after all these years but i am street smart.

Didn't answer my question  I don't want to derail the thread though, so I'll drop it. Agree to disagree on EDC mentality :)

yes,

it is primary means of self defenence even though i am big, ma trained

agreed on thread. i just do not like spdyco knives this thread is about quality and having too compete. if you buy a lower cost knife from a quality company your not going to get AAA service.

If you buy there high end knife then you should get a AAA service but there so much abuse - how many youtube videos are there of people trying to break knives with long warranties.

Baton or not too baton while that is not subject a knife is not an axe - they now claim too be one because they have too.

i am new and i do not want too troll so i am off this thread and up all night zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

best of luck with your issue, buy a lot of cheap knives and toss them like i do i got dozens of $10 smith westens (worst knives made in china by the way IMHO) bad 440a (probably a zinc alloy - lol!) and when dull i toss'm or break.

Well the blade chipped and dulled very quick.

I had this issue with my beater Tenacious I got a while back, but it sharpened out fairly easily for me. In this case, it's because it's a low end steel and expecting it to perform as well as steels like S30V, 154CM etc isn't what I'd call realistic.

My Tenacious has never chipped, but I don't try to cut dirt or concrete. It does fine on rope, plastic, paper, food and leather. Sure it dulls fast but it sharpens up hair whittling faster.

The steel on my Tenacious also isnt good. It gets dull very fast.
Spyderco makes high end knives too. The steel on my Native 5 is CPM S35VN. No, its not even close to as cheap, but it was worth it.
I have been using the heck out of it, and if it HAS gotten dull, Im not aware of it.
Pay more, get more.

Cutting through soil is always sub optimal. If you are going to be doing that all day, you might as well get a box cutter. No blade is going to withstand cutting through soil for very long. Also, it's highly unlikely that you chipped an 8Cr13MoV knife, because it's a softer steel. If you did chip it, that would lead me to believe that there was a problem with a heat treat. This would be covered under warranty, and you can get yourself a replacement. Best of luck.

That'll happen, OP.

8cr13 is not overly good stuff. My experience has been that it goes dull pretty quickly, and that it is very prone to chipping when it hits harder materials (ex: staples in boxes, or rocks / sand in topsoil) where other steels tend to just roll a bit or have minor deformations. Chipping is a major pain in the butt and if you took the time to sharpen out every little chip when you were sharpening it, I can see how it would take a long time. I sold mine quite a while ago because I didn't think the steel was any good for my uses, either - When it comes to inexpensive knives, I prefer something (ideally) that holds an edge better, or at the very least something that is less prone to chipping (ex: Aus-8, 14c28n, 440C, 440A, etc). Obviously any steel will go dull if you cut soil with it, but it takes longer to sharpen steels that are prone to chipping than it will steels that aren't.

If you're not happy with the knife, don't use it - people might tell you you're full of crap for disliking it, but for what it's worth, I don't like the Tenacious at all either.

I do, however, friggin' love every one of the USA-made spydercos I've handled to date. I like the Manixes enough that I've bought a half dozen of the things, so if I were you, I wouldn't write off the whole company just yet.

Mine hates zip ties. That got the worst chip. A few tiny ones from time to time with other stuff.

I think the blade geometry is a part of it also. With a good steel and spydercos FFG you shouldn't have any problems. But a cheap steel with the FFG has such thin blade geometry that it can't handle that much stress and will chip/bend etc...

ok so not ban me.

but they are over rated very hard for me too deploy - give me a flipper on the top and thumb screw on both sides.

if want too cut every day use a fix blade hollow ground, it is rare, unless your tradesman. Pocket EDC is for defence first. If you need to cut a lot and feel the need for safty then it pays for expensive steel and better knife. Other wise.... see my other post on EDC.

I was in sales in for many trades and kept 2 on me one a cutter, defense knife and had 100 knives and 1 spyder. I do like spyder jackets and match shirts for skiing!

What?

Leave it to meanwhile to dump a negative Bark River remark in a thread about a Spyderco. Gotta give you props on your dogged persistence, no matter how irrelevant the reference may be to the discussion at hand. :)

A very astute and well stated observation.

It seems that there's a troll under every bridge.

If you're gonna' cut a lot of dirt, invest in a hori hori and a quality file.
