Disappointed with this mini griptilian.....

I just got a Mini Griptillian MDP and put Ryan Roberts "Death Grips" from KnifeWorks on it.
I liked it so much I ordered a Doug Ritter RSK MK1 and a Mini RSK MK1.

I too held off thinking the plastic would feel cheap. It didn't, but I had intended on using the G10 scales anyway.

Just got my mini griptilian today in the mail(555 hg)Was anxiouse waiting for it but now that i got it im kind of disappointed. For almost 100$ it feels very cheaply made. Alot of blade play and the handles feel very cheap. Feels decent in hand but feels like it could fall apart any minute. Also dont like how the edge was profiled. Havnt done any hard use with it yet but so far not very fond of it. This was my first benchmade folder and was kind of expecting more. Spyderco's knives in the 100$ range are alot better quality in my opinion...

C'mon son, you ain't gonna hard use that knife. Who buys a mini grip to hard use it??? That don't make no sense...

Hearing that you paid $100 for it makes me cringe. IMO it was an ok value at $60, but for $100? You could almost get a Para 2, or get a manix or caly 3.5. A super blue endura, zdp endura, superblue stretch, or zdp stretch are all in that range.

I would just take the loss, learn something, and get something from Spyderco you will enjoy.

Yea im guna mess with the pivot a little bit give it a few weeks and see if it grows on me and go from there. I would like to buy different scales for it but i dont feel its worth putting 70-100$ plus into this knife i could buy a nice spyderco instead of buying new handles. I have been buying nothing but spyderco for the past few months and figured i would give the grip a shot. Did do research and got mixed reactions. But il give it a few weeks and see if i end up liking it. Still in my opionion for a 90$ knife the quality is not as good as i thought it would be. But well see

When I started collecting/edc knives, I didnt understand the hype about Benchmade griptilians. I went ahead to buy 556 just for kicks before Benchmade enforce MAP. I ended up not liking it except for the axis lock. Sabre grind is horrible for edc use. I'm fine with the cheap plastic feel at $60 but not when it cost what it does now. Hot spots after using it for a short period of time pisses me off.

Griptilians are acceptable at $60 but nowhere near $90+. Now my griptilian is my beater/loaner knife, I treat it like a sharpen prybar(works as one well). For real cutting task, I would rather pull out my Dragonfly2 ZDP-189.

Yea thats one of the reasons i bought it, alot of people seemed to like it so i figured id give it a shot. And i do like the axis lock. Which was another big reason i decided to buy it. It will probably just serve as a secondary to my native 5, my main edc knife.

nothing wrong with having an opinion. Personally I love my 556. It's my edc at the moment. I don't really care for its big brother though. The mini grip feels so much better in hand and does what I need it to. Now I'm eyeing a 707, just can't seem to pull the trigger on it.

I just order myself a ritter and ritter mini. Hopefully the higher sabre grind(almost FFG) will change my opinion about griptilians. I generally stay away from Benchmade because of their sabre grind and even more so now after they enforced MAP. I'm sad to admit that I own an adamas(super prybar) and a 943 but thankfully before MAP.

Now that looks beautiful. Where did you get those from?

They are Kevin Wilkins scales from Germany. The top is anodized Aluminum and the bottom is G10.

He also makes Titanium.

Keyman (and others) here on Bladeforums also do excellent work. Google Keyman Scales for pics.

Sounds like you left your comfort zone by trying something else, but you seem to have had your mind made up from the beginning.

Also sounds like you really wanted to try out an Axis lock but decided to "cheap out" by getting a mini grip. What I would do in your situation is return the grip pay around $15 more and get an H&K 14715BK

Cheap out? Over 15$? If you knew how much ive spent on knives the past few months you would know im not the "cheap out" type.

They are what they are - the cheapest knife Benchmade offers. The reason is mainly due to the handle material. A lot of people think the 551 feels 'hollow' and isn't as decent feeling as the mini grip however I disagree. I actually love mine - then again I didn't pay current pricing. That's the biggest problem IMO. A 551 vs. a PM2 at basically the same price? I say PM2 hands down.

I was just saying that it seemed to me that you wanted to try an axis lock but didn't want to spend too much $ on an unknown quantity. So you got the least expensive option to take for a spin. I was just suggesting anothe BM with an Axis that only costs a bit more than you spent that has g10 scales. My apologies, no offense meant.

I like the mini grip and 940 that I purchased before Benchmade eliminated the discounts. Afterwards the funds for a second mini grip I didn't purchase went towards a Spyderco Manix 2 L/W. The funds for a Griptillian that I didn't purchase went towards a Superblue sprint run Stretch and the 943 that I would have purchased became a second Para2. I'm a happy camper.:)

I have a mini Ritter grip that is a great, great knife. I carried it for several years, and would be now, but it got kicked out of my pocket by a nice little custom from a maker on BF (John Kiedaisch of JK knives).

I love the blade profile, the action is smooth, and it locks up quick and solid. I used it for all sorts of things from breaking down boxes to light carving of green wood and woodsy type stuff. I did chip out a 1/8" hunk of the blade when I cut some CAT5 cable. I'm not a huge fan of s30v steel, but otherwise the knife is one of my favorites.

I never had a problem with the scales.

I carry my full size Ritter Grip more often than not. Crazy slicer, especially for the size. The handles don't both me at all, except that they are wide in the pocket. I'll be replacing with some Cuscadi grooved aero carbon fiber scales. Anyway, the knives are built very tough; they simply seem weaker because the lock is so easy to interface and move, plus the handle scales really are a better fit for a less than $85 price tag. Times are what they are, however.
