Disappointing Spyderco Warranty Experience

That scratch can easily be removed with some rubbing compound and some 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Than when finished with those 2 steps, use some metal polish and it will look great!

I’m having a hard time seeing what’s wrong with the sharp maker.
I think basically nothing is wrong with it.
From what I read it seems he is expecting the sharpening 'rods' to lock into the base as solid as a rock when in the storage position. They don't and he can't understand it.
That is just my take on it as I understand what he has written.
That is all I know.............. :)

Uh, can't see the scratch on the Native. Anyone care to point it out to me?

Really, my Mili looked far worse than that after a month of use...and if you aren't going to use it, it wasn't worth it in the first place.

The Sharpmaker problem I can see as an annoyance, but I don't own one so can't say more than that.

Don't worry about the sharpmaker, my stuff rattles around in mine too. Just put the lid on it and you'll be fine.

As long as the stones seat firmly when sharpening, then you're ok.

I wouldn't worry about a scratch on a $50 knife, the Native is a beater knife anyways. Abuse the heck out it.

The whole problem, that I'm having with the rods is that they don't seat firmly all. What happens during sharpening is the rods lift up on the opposite end.Lets say I had a knife in my right hand with the edge facing the right and immediately upon contact with the rods on the right end;the left end immediately lifts up from the base. Then as it approaches the center it straightens out but when it goes toward the left end the right will lift up. Making it practically useless in sharpening like a razor as Sal demostrates in his DVD.I have even viewed this particlular part on the DVD,several times and am puzzled. What puzzled me even more was the person at the repair dept told use to use the slots on the bottom of the base instead.

IMHO,If the product does not work as it was designed,it's clearly defective. FYI,everybody, the original sharpmaker base I had before was perfect in everyway and I was extremely satisfied.Except for the unfortunate prying apart of the halves.I did ask members awhile ago, about what I should do and I was advise to send it in and now it seems that I should of just expoxied the two halves together. And that would of been the end.

With the Native,I agree it not a custom but a user. But, I don't see myself putting as a deep of a scratch on the knife than what is present now through hard use and no I don't see myself beating the hell out of it.That's abuse which could lead to personal injury.I mostly use my knife to open letters, box, cutting up boxes for recycling and the occasional whittling. The real issue,is I fear that if something were to get caught in the scratch,it would make it a chore to clean.

The rods are placed in the grooves on the underside of the unit when sharpening in that manner.

Seriously, is this another April fools? Im really squinting my eyes here, and i still cant see anything on that Native.

As for the Sharpmaker, it dosent sound any different than mine.

I think I see the see the "scratch".....maybe. ;)
From the pivot side of the 'Spydie hole' go about 2/3 of the hole forward, look down and see the small grind line from the top of the grind down to the edge.

That is all I can barely see that he could be talking about?????

IMO..... much, much too picky for this knife.
Same for the Sharpmaker.....

The only thing I see on the Native are grind lines, normal for satin S30V.

Oh I get it now,you are trying to sharpen with them laying flat on top.
That will not work,I am looking at mine now. When in the storage groves on top my rods rock around like yours but when I turn the base over and put them in the groves on bottom they are solid. The groves on bottom of the base turn the 204 into a bench stone.

+1

Your sharpmaker seems like the one I’ve got now, and the one I used to have.

ummm, a scratch in a knife that you use? are you kidding me? I dont even see anything. I cant comment on the sharpmaker as I dont own one. You need to step down your anal radar a few notches.

yeah, you're doing it wrong.

the cutouts underneath the storage unit are for benchstone sharpening, which is how it is designed. where you have the stones placed is for storage only.

you should watch the video and read the instructions. again if necessary.

Here is just a little advice. And no im not trying to be rude. READ your instructions before using items and that would clarify your confusion completely. And if you bought it used then look up sharpmaker videos on youtube. And if you did get the dvd just plop down with a beer or two and enjoy.

It has been a while since I saw the dvd but doesn't Sal demonstrate placing the rods in the underside of the base? The OP claims to have watched that part of the dvd several times.

Way back when I was a young fellow I received some good advice.

A bad workman always blames his tools.

Yes he certainly does. He demonstrates every single use of the sharpmaker in very clear and concise detail so not sure why the op is trying to sharpen with the method he is using.

I didn't see any scratches.
Look close.... real, real, real close.... it's there.... right where I described in an earlier post.

But I'd be shocked if it was a "scratch".. it appears to simply be a line in the grind.... a grind line. Nothing more.... nothing less.

Nothing all that uncommon in a knife of this price range... what ever the brand.

Who know......
