discontinued = safe queen?

I recently realized that my extra large CS Vaquero is now discontinued. It's not really a "classic" in the strict sense of the word, but now that it's no longer being manufactured, I'm considering just keeping it in storage. It's a nice knife, it's seen rotation as an EDC but maybe I'll just setting it aside as a safe queen. Someone else I know has a Spyderco Yojimbo and as far as I know he stopped carrying it as EDC when they were also discontinued.

Anyone else have the same policy, of not using particular knives that have been discontinued?

Not me. I edc a Kershaw 1416 XXL Starkey Ridge. They haven't been made since the late 90's. I really enjoy these knives. I own 4. So allowing for loss and wear and tear, they should last for the rest of my life. I EDC a large knife because I have Diabetic Neuropathy and I'm dropping smaller knives all the time.

Spyderco unlike Cold Steel almost always sees a dramatic increase in price on it's discontinued models. The Cold Steel models just aren't as sought after as Spyderco.
I never use a lot of knives I have, just don't see the need to use every single one and cut the value of them. If you decided to sell or trade them later you just get so much more brand new compared to used.
If you have already used a blade there's not really much use to stop, IMO.
I either have them mint or used there's no in-between for me.

If by "Extra Large Vaquero," you mean the one with the 5-inch blade, I say use it! I had one, way back when they called it the "El Vaquero." They discontinued them for a while, only to bring 'em back later. Even if they never bring 'em back, they'lll never collect enough value, in my opinion, to be worth more than $100. For that small amount of money, you'd be best served just using it. It's a good knife!

I have one NIB, are they bringing much more now than what they went for new?

Sort of. Both of my current carry knives are actually discontinued, but I have duplicates set aside for collecting. Generally speaking though, I would never carry anything that couldn't easily be replaced.

My old Benchmade 812 is as close as I get. I'm a little paranoid about it getting lost and replacing it wouldn't be impractical! I still carry it occassionally, but less then my other premium knives.

Jill, I feel a strange urge to send you a used Military. Just for some variety from the Salt. :D

Cold Steel products don't really gain value when disco'd like Spyderco's do. So the answer would be just use it. :)

I don't see why you can't continue carrying the knife. If you want a safe queen, just get another one or two and keep them. The Vaquero is one of the best self defense knives on the market and also is a good emergency knife.

I haven't heard that it's being discontinued. The 5-incher is very nice.

I only stop using them if a replacement is too rare to be found quickly at a decent price.

I wish. New price was $125. Now around $75 or thereabouts. I wouldn't take that for any of mine though.

My Dad bought the one I have for 75 in 1998 and now you say they are only fetching 75?
If that's so it just makes me glad I only collect Spyderco these days.
I messed around with other brands, but I never seen any of them save a few Benchmades go up much when discontinued.

Interesting thread here. I say if you like it, use it. For me, most of my EDC knives I bought because they got discontinued. I have a Benchmade Pinnacle that I carry the most, a SOG Night Vision (the one with G10 handles, not Zytel), and two Emerson Ravens. I like all these knives, so they get carried and used.
